I think there are two options in this case... first, he could have run away... maybe he didn't have a good relationship with his wife... I mean, she probably bothered him or was bossy... after so many years together, he mustered the courage to leave for good, which would justify leaving the wallet... maybe he asked for duplicates... and the second, which I like the most, is suicide... leaving the wallet is also justified in this option...
