The Tattnall County Sheriff's Office has issued the following notice regarding remains discovered this week:
"On Tuesday, February 26th , 2019, the Tattnall County Sheriff’s Office received a call in reference to human skeletal remains being located in a wooded area off the Clarence Green Road outside of Cobbtown, Tattnall County, Georgia. The Tattnall County Sheriff’s Office with the assistance of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation excavated the skeletal remains, which will be transported to the GBI Crime Lab for identification purposes. Anyone with information concerning the skeletal remains should call the Tattnall County Sheriff’s Office at (912) 557-6777 or the GBI Statesboro office at (912) 871-1121."

On Tuesday, landowners were getting ready for a controlled burn when they spotted some bones and called authorities. When they searched the property, they found more bones scattered over a large area. Sheriff Kyle Sapp says they don’t have any active missing persons cases, and the bones look like they’ve been there for a long time. He says this isn’t their normal case where they search for a missing person and find their remains.

“It is exactly the opposite,” Sheriff Sapp said. “We have skeletal remains, but we have no missing persons that we know of in our area.”

This area is rural farmland--Cobbtown has a population of about 300. There is some acreage listed for sale right now along that road if anyone wants to get an idea of the area. Being that there's a good bit of agriculture, there may also be migrant workers in the area that wouldn't necessarily be listed on the census or likely to be reported missing. You're a good ten miles or so from I-16 there, and 30+ to Statesboro, so if this is either someone who had reason to be in the area or who was put there by someone who did.

Interestingly, Georgia State Prison is in Tattnall County, in neighboring Reidsville. It's housed MLK Jr, and Wayne Williams, at varying times.

Summary​

In February 2019, the skeletal remains of an unidentified individual were discovered by a landowner during a controlled burn in Collins, Georgia, about 70 miles west of Savannah. Authorities responded to the scene where the remains were given to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

An autopsy determined that the individual was of Native American ancestry, with an estimated height between 4'9" and 5'6". The time since death was estimated to be between 4 and 15 years, and there was no evidence of trauma at or near the time of death. The individual was estimated to be between 27 and 66 years old. The cause and manner of death were undetermined, and the identification of the individual remains unknown.

In September 2023, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation partnered with Othram to determine if advanced DNA testing can help to determine the identity of the individual. Othram scientists will work to develop a suitable DNA extract, which will be used with Forensic-Grade Genome Sequencing® to create a comprehensive DNA profile for the individual. Othram's in-house forensic genetic genealogy team will perform records research and use genetic genealogy to develop new leads in the case.
