Fredricksburg Police wants public assistance in solving cold case on 25th anniversary

FREDRICKSBURG, Va. (WWBT) - Fredricksburg Police are hoping the public can help solve a cold case on its 25th anniversary.

Geraldine Ross was found stabbed and strangled inside her apartment located in the 1600 block of Forrest Village Drive in Fredricksburg.

Geraldine’s eight-year-old son, Jonathan came home from school and noticed the door to the house was locked. After waiting outside for several hours, a maintenance worker noticed Jonathan and asked why he was out in the cold. After letting him into the apartment, Jonathan discovered his mother lying on the bedroom floor unresponsive.

Geraldine had been dead for a while. Given that there was no forced entry in the apartment, investigators indicated that she may have known her attacker.

A son's painful memories
"J ONATHAN ROSS pictured his mother smiling down on him as he sent his cap sailing skyward at Spotsylvania High School's graduation last night.

Few of his friends and classmates know the young man has spent nearly 10 years fighting another image burned in his mind."
"On Dec. 9, 1994, when he was eight years old, Jonathan came home from school to find his mother dead in their Fredericksburg apartment, a knife stuck in her chest.

"That image stays with me all day, every day," the 18-year-old said this week".
"Neighbors in the Forest Village apartment complex off Fall Hill Avenue last saw her alive around 11 a.m.

That afternoon, Jonathan's mother wasn't there to meet him at the bus stop."

"Geraldine Ross was sprawled on the floor, half of her body out the doorway. The killer's knife was still stuck in her chest, but Jonathan didn't realize what he was seeing."

"Detectives said there were no signs of forced entry into the apartment, and Geraldine Ross was not sexually assaulted. But it was clear she put up a fight.

"Things were knocked over," Perkins said. "And we found evidence we're very interested in re-evaluating."

Detectives hope new advances in DNA and other forensic technology will finally help bring the killer to justice."

Police Request Help On 25th Anniversary Of Single Mom's Murder

"Police investigators determined that Ross had been stabbed and strangled. There was no forced entry into the apartment, possibly indicating she may have known her attacker. The Fredericksburg Police Department, in cooperation with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, are continuing to work on the case.


The police department is in the process of resubmitting evidence for examination using more modern techniques that were not available 25 years ago. The police also will be re-interviewing people already questioned about Ross, as well as some new names the police recently uncovered."

Fredericksburg police are asking anyone who has any information about Ross's death, even if they believe the information is already known, to contact the Fredericksburg Police Department at 540-373-3122.

"We know that there are persons who knew Geraldine that have information that can help police determine what happened that day," the police department said Dec. 9 in a statement.

A candelight vigil is being held at the Forest Village Apartments in Fredericksburg at 6 p.m. on Dec. 9 to honor Ross. Both Ross and her son Jonathan are graduates of Spotsylvania High School.
