In which, in 1984, a paranoid man named Günther Stoll, Anzhausen, Germany, jots six letters on a paper, crosses it out, leaves his home and wife, disappears down the pub, goes missing, and two hours later is found, naked and dead, in his wrecked car, though the injuries he suffered were not sustained in the car crash. And then there's the part about him revisiting his childhood neighborhood just beforehand.

Wiki: YOGTZE case

The Lineup: YOGTZE-Fall: The Perplexing Death of Günther Stoll

Cracked: (#4 here is a rollicking account)

I just came upon this case and it is so strange.
YOGTZE case - Wikipedia
Are there any sleuths who are good at cracking codes on here at all.
Try YOGTZ6 instead

I have done a search on ancestry and no surnames like that but a few sounds like, similar, soundex ones. If he was writing in a hurry maybe he was trying to write a name:-
Yogts surname

Possible ideas:

  • Upside-Down Numbers: When flipped, the note can be read as the number 027,906.
  • Scientific Anagram: The letters are an anagram for "Zygote," leading to speculation it referred to Stoll's work as a food technician, perhaps involving genetic modification.
  • Phonetic Misspelling: Another theory suggests it was simply a misspelling of the game "Yahtzee," which Stoll might have shouted after having a sudden "epiphany".

I just came across the case in a Youtube Video and was stunned given I am from the very same area and have friends that are from Anzhausen themselves. The village is like a 10 minute drive away.. and I never heard about it before today.

As for the idea of the Upside-Down Numbers, there might be something to it, as 027 is the beginning of every area code around Siegen.
Siegen has 0271
Anzhausen itself has 02737 and Wilnsdorf has 02739.
And Haigerseelbach has 02773

I contemplated whether it might be that he tried to note down a phone number.

But ultimately the case is now being called "solved" by the Hagen police, as several experts have come to the conclusion his injuries stem from a car crash opposed to him being run over. Also there was no DNA found in his car except for his own.. and I doubt that even a career criminal would have known to clean a crime scene at the time, as the first crime solved this way was in 1986.

Still it irks me, given Stoll was not in a position to be likely for his paranoia to take this exact shape. I know the community he comes from and its very safe and rural.
Also the investigation never addressed that the witnesses who found Stoll, saw a man in a white jacket at the site of the car crash.

Soo.. if anyone wants to brainstrom.. I have some thoughts on the matter..
And don't hold back if you think it's not worth it.. ultimately professionals have already deemed it solved.
