Lüneburg- At least five people are said to have murdered the former cemetery gardener Kurt-Werner Wichmann. In the case of the alleged serial killer of Lüneburg, the police are now examining possible connections to 236 acts.

These include homicides and rape, as the police announced on Tuesday.

All conceivable connections are examined, if there are parallels.

So it may also go to many cases that are probably not related to the former cemetery gardener.

Kurt-Werner Wichmann is considered responsible for the two double murders in the Göhrde in 1989. He died in 1993.

The corpse of Birgit Meier, who has been missing since 1989, was also found under a garage on a former plot of the man in September 2017 on the outskirts of Lüneburg .

Last year, the police department then set up a clearing house at the Göhrde investigative team.

Other departments in Germany and abroad should be contacted and thus adjust their cases on the basis of the Göhrde murders.

The police department posted numerous evidence items from the man's former home on Tuesday, including handbags, shoes and vehicle parts.


The items had been secured during extensive search , 217 of them were sent to the State Office of Criminal Investigation in Hannover .

Initial reports would already be available, said investigating group leader Jürgen Schubbert. His team was increased to eight employees in April.

"So far, there has been no decisive indication of this feedback," said Schubbert.

The items would still be evaluated.

There were news of two detonated weapons discovered in October last year.

At least one of them has been rebuilt so that from the revolver with separate barrel then small caliber ammunition could be fired.

When comparing with existing floors, there was no hit. The police can not rule out that the gardener had used the weapon.[.....]

The investigative group GÖHRDE of the police department Lüneburg deals with two double murders in the forest area Göhrde (district Lüchow-Dannenberg) as well as another murder from the year 1989.

Four bodies were found in succession in the state forest Göhrde.

Another body was recovered in 2017, set in the former residence of a suspect.

Kurt-Werner WICHMANN, who suicideed in 1993, is considered urgently suspect.

The investigation group GÖHRDE assumes that Kurt-Werner WICHMANN and a surviving accomplice for this and a variety of other murders in the entire federal territory could come as an offender in question.

WICHMANN buried a car on his property during his lifetime, in which a corpse was probably transported.

In 2018, the residential building and the large property from the former possession of WICHMANN were searched in an extensive campaign. A considerable number of evidence was found buried.

This includes parts of different vehicles. WICHMANN's affinity was the burial - he is therefore referred to in public as the "murdering cemetery gardener".

By publishing the evidence, the investigation group Göhrde hopes for information from the population and asks:

Kurt-Werner Wichmann - Wikipedia
"Wichmann came to the first time to a youth detention center at the age of 14, after he had threatened a subtenant in his parents' house with a knife and tried to strangle her. At that time, Wichmann did not live at home, but grew up in care home in Wichernstift. But he did not want to stay there any longer, and stole money from place for his parents. The father was violent and is said to have mistreated his sons.[1] At 16, Wichmann attacked a cyclist and sexually abused her, giving him six months of probation. In 1967 he threatened police officers with a small-caliber weapon and was sentenced to one year of juvenile punishment. In 1968, the 38-year-old Ilse G. was hit in the back while riding a bicycle in a forest near Lüneburg with four shots from a small-caliber rifle, dying on the spot. Witnesses saw a youth who suited Wichmann's description flee, and the police filed a file on him. Although small caliber rifles and newspaper clippings were found in his possession, Wichmann was not charged. In 1970, he was sentenced to five and a half years of juvenile punishment for the rape of a hitchhiker, whom he also tried to strangle. The hitchhiker managed to persuade him to let her go. When Wichmann read the news in the newspaper, he felt misrepresented and went to the police to correct this, which led to his arrest.

Wichmann was well known as a blond, down-to-earth man with a well-groomed appearance. A witness described him as a silent guy with cold, icy eyes eyeing everything.[1] Others described him as an arrogant and egotistical loner. What was remarkable about him was that he always wore gloves and sunglasses. In one of his cars, an army sleeping bag for staying outdoors overnight was found, as well as binoculars and maps. In addition, he often stayed in the forest. He lived in a house in a cul-de-sac on the edge of Lüneberg directly at the forest.[2] He grew up in that house, had a German shepherd and hung towards right-wing political attitudes (on his property he occasionally hoisted the Reichskriegsflagge). In the course of time he had also made several modifications, including secret caches and a door which led to nothing: you looked through it from above the garage and behind it was an attached gallows rope. At the time of the murder of Birgit Meier he was married, and his widow of 13 years died in 2006. He often needed money, and at the time of his death was overindebted and advertised himself as a callboy for magazines."

I just watched “Dig Deeper - The Disappearance of Birgit Meier“ on Netflix. And I found it to be quite well done and presented. And it was an amazing story told of how the case was re-examined and addressed. Perseverance and dedication.

In reflecting on it, it sure seemed that the assailant kept that one particular item in the upper left vest pocket as a souvenir or trophy. Thank goodness he did.
