Germany - Masked gunman opens fire in a cinema in Viernheim, 23 June 2016

German police have sealed off a cinema complex in Viernheim, in Germany’s Hesse region, after an armed man barricaded himself in a cinema. There have been no confirmed reports of whether the man has taken hostages.

Various German media are reporting that about 25 people have been injured, with Bild newspaper claiming the injuries are due to the use of CS gas.

No indication has so far been given as to the shooter’s motives or intention.

Not sure of its accuracy, but CNN is reporting the gunman has been apprehended. Lots of conflicting info at the moment. I've also read up to 50 injured.

Peter Beuth, the interior minister of the German state Hesse told the state parliament that special forces had "fought and killed" the man, who had been visibly confused and had fired at least four shots inside the cinema with a rifle, the German newspaper DPA reports.

Beuth said the elite police stormed the cinema from the rear, the newspaper Mannheimer Morgen reported.

Authorities did not immediately identify the gunman or suggest a possible motive. DPA quoted unidentified security sources as saying the gunman was acting alone and was not a terrorist.
