'A German nurse has admitted killing 30 of his patients by injecting them with cardiovascular medication.

The 38-year-old, identified only as Niels H, told a court-appointed psychiatrist that he had wanted to show off his “excellent” resuscitation skills. He is suspected of having killed 178 patients who were in his care at Delmenhorst hospital, near Bremen, in northern Germany, between 2003 and 2005.

The psychiatrist, Konstantin Karyofilis, told a court in Oldenburg that the accused administered a cardiovascular drug by injecting it into patients’ veins in order to orchestrate medical emergencies that would then require him to resuscitate the patients in the hospital’s intensive care unit...'

German suspected serial killer nurse jailed for life

Feb. 26, 2015, 10:01 AM

Oldenburg (Germany) (AFP) - A German nurse was sentenced to life in prison Thursday for murdering two hospital patients but authorities fear a far higher death toll after he admitted killing 30 people in a thrill-seeking life and death game.

The 38-year-old man, identified only as Niels H., has admitted to injecting his patients with lethal drug doses in a bid to try to revive them and shine as a saviour before his medical peers.

[...]
Authorities said Monday they would exhume the bodies of more former patients to test them for traces of the lethal doses of heart medicine amid fears H. is one of the worst serial killers in German post-war history.

The sweeping investigation is looking into some 200 fatalities recorded at the hospital where he worked and at his previous places of employment to find out whether the confirmed cases are only the tip of the iceberg.

The 38-year-old said he was "honestly sorry" and hoped families would find peace if he was convicted, news agency DPA reported.

Identified only as Niels H under German court reporting rules, the accused told the court he acted on impulse.

"Usually the decision to do it was relatively spontaneous," he said.

A nurse jailed for life for killing two patients with lethal drug overdoses murdered at least 90 patients in total, police said. Niels Högel, 40, was jailed in February 2015 for two murders and several attempted murders of intensive-care patients at Delmenhorst hospital near the northern city of Bremen. Police said on Monday that investigators exhuming and analysing more bodies had since found evidence of many more murders.

“The death toll is unique in the history of the German republic,” said the chief police investigator, Arne Schmidt, adding that Högel killed randomly and preyed especially on those in critical condition. “[There was] evidence for at least 90 murders, and at least as many [suspected] cases again that can no longer be proven,” he told a press conference, declaring himself “speechless” at the outcome.

Högel admitted to injecting patients with a drug that can cause heart failure or circulatory collapse so he could then try to revive them and, when successful, shine as a saviour before his medical peers. He said he felt euphoric when he managed to bring a patient back to life, and devastated when he failed.

Death Toll for German Serial Killer Nurse Goes Up, Another 97 Victims Suspected

"...Högel was sentenced to life in prison in 2015 on two counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder. But during his trial, he confessed to killing many others.

He admitted to injecting 90 of his patients with a lethal cocktail of drugs in order to induce heart failure or circulatory collapse so he could try to revive them. Högel believed bringing dying patients back from the brink of death would help him shine as a hero and garner respect from his peers and superiors.

The New York Times reported Högel said he acted "out of boredom" and Reuters added that he described feeling euphoric after bringing someone back to life, although he often failed..."

German prosecutors have attributed one more murder to a former nurse accused of killing dozens of patients at two hospitals, bringing to 98 the number of slayings he is expected to face trial for later this year.

Niels Hoegel is already serving a life sentence for two murders. He was charged earlier this year with killing 97 more patients over several years at the hospitals in northwestern Germany. His trial is scheduled to open Oct. 30 in Oldenburg.

A former nurse has admitted to killing 100 patients in his care, on the first day of his trial in the biggest serial killing case in Germany’s post-war history.

Niels Hoegel, 41, has already spent nearly a decade in prison on a life term for other patient deaths. He is accused of intentionally administering medical overdoses to victims so he could bring them back to life at the last moment.

German ex-nurse convicted of killing 85 patients

He was convicted of 85 murders. Who knows how many almost died but he managed to resuscitate, and how many died but the murders can't be proven. Clearly he got a thrill from being a hero when he saved someone.

A former colleague told the German newspaper Bild that Högel was nicknamed "resuscitation Rambo" because of the way he "pushed everyone else aside" when patients needed to be resuscitated.

It is believed Niels Högel killed as many as 300 of his patients

June 06, 2019

"...CNN reports that Niels Högel, 42, a former nurse believed to be Germany’s deadliest post-war serial killer, received his sentence inside the District Court of Oldenburg.

Sentencing Judge Sebastian Buehrmann called Högel’s crimes “incomprehensible,” according to CNN....

On Wednesday, Högel asked that his victims’ families forgive his “horrible acts,” CNN reports.

Judge Buehrmann chastised Högel’s co-workers — some of whom suspected he was up to no good.

Buehrmann said Högel’s colleagues experienced a “collective amnesia.”"
