According to a court calendar, Heuermann is scheduled to appear before Judge Timothy Mazzei for an 8 a.m. status conference in Suffolk County Court in Riverhead, N.Y.

But the hearing likely won't take place until 2 p.m., court officials told The Messenger.

Defense attorney Michael J. Brown may ask that Heuermann, who's being held without bail, be allowed to skip the hearing, a court source said.

But that request isn't likely to be granted, the source added.

Brown could also seek to have bail set for Heuermann but officials haven't gotten any indication that will happen, the source said.

What possible reason could he have not to appear?

'We hear from a legal expert about today's court hearing for suspected Gilgo Beach serial killer Rex Heuermann on Long Island.'

Someone asked me yesterday why I thought Heuermann, an architect, would allow his own home to look in such disrepair. I flippantly replied, " Because it's his childhood binky ? ". Later in the day I was sitting on the porch having coffee, and I recalled that conversation. The more I got to thinking about it, the more I started to think that I really, unintentionally , might have hit on something. Anyone who has ever had a child knows that a child's blankie is their security. They pitch a fit if you wash it, or try to sew it when it gets ratty, etc. etc. Basically, they want it exactly how it was when it first began to offer them comfort. If you think about RH's father dying when he was 12 years old (approaching puberty), and if the accounts of school mates are true that he was bullied and always left school and "had to get home to his mother "...that house could WELL be his security blanket.

(How's that for a goofy theory, InTheDetails ? ;) )
That makes sense to me.

Neighbors are reaching out and sending care packages and grocery deliveries to the family of LISK.

“Everything in the house was turned upside down,” Macedonio said. “Dresser drawers were emptied out. The bathroom tub ... was actually cut open. The floors were ripped up. The couches and the mattresses have been removed.”

The family has received support, Macedonio said, including from the daughter of serial killer Keith Hunter Jesperson, the so-called "happy face killer" convicted of killing eight women over five years.

“It’s been extremely overwhelming for her and the children trying to piece life back together to what it was two and a half weeks ago,” Macedonio said. “I don’t know if they’re ever going to return to normalcy, but day by day she’s getting better.”

It comes as Heuermann is set to appear at a 2 p.m. conference hearing, where the court is expected to go over evidence and talk with witnesses.

"My children cry themselves to sleep. I mean, they're not children. They're grown adults, but they're my children. And my son has developmental disabilities, and he cried himself to sleep," she said in the statement. "He's so distraught and doesn't understand. And as a mother, I have no answers for him."

Can't imagine how hard this is for AE and her son and daughter.
The confusion, the anger, the fear and everything else that comes along with this.

Hope people are being genuine when they drop off these care packages and aren't being "looky lou's" or seeking a bit of gossip.

Their trust in others must be at an all time low.

Moo

Edit - spelling mistake

If it’s true that AE used food stamps and son may get SSI for his disability THEN they would be eligible for more welfare and housing. Then after this is all done like many she can write a book, sell the property and have freedom and money to start a new life. JMOO

The waiting list for housing is often years long, and the housing is pretty awful in most places, IME. MOO There's only so much an EBT card will do for you. As far as welfare, it's peanuts in a housing market where costs are outrageous. AE doesn't strike me as someone who will want to write a book about this saga. AMOO I feel so sad for this family.

Hopefully if that is the case, maybe even a social worker can get involved to help with the ins and outs so she doesn't have to spin her wheels or deal with any confusion. I'm still fighting for my own disability so those avenues aren't available to me and I know there have been times I've really wished to have the extra help. I hope they have those avenues available to them.

Not to mention that you can't get housed if you have a place to stay. She'd have to evicted for a building code or something.

Very true! And she can't get housing if she has resources from the sale of the home or land. MOO, AE is in a really tough spot.

Is there no support, the family are themselves victims.

So I've been doing some research on missing and women murdered in Las Vegas ... Since RH has/had a timeshare there and it Vegas is a mecca for prostitution. Is there a thread for those cases being connected to RH somewhere ...or is it appropriate to bring up sleuthing the possible connection to RH in those individual threads for each woman? Also some interesting things in Reno... I hope I'm making sense. I got little sleep last night because insomnia! That's probably how I got into sleuthing to begin with... Sigh.

I signed up, just to ask this. I hope that’s ok.

Since she is still married to the suspect, could donations made to her through things like go-fund-me end up being split with him and used for his legal fees?

Welcome to Websleuths @Podstan, thank you for your question!

I don't have the answer but wanted to respond that you make a very good point that I hadn't thought about. Hopefully someone with a better understanding of community property / equitable distribution in marriage / divorce in NY State & U.S. can clarify.

I do feel bad for Asa and her kids, but I hope Megan’s and Maureen’s children are also getting some help they must really be going through it now. Also Asas lawyer should put blame where it belongs RH and not law enforcement.

Welcome!

You have a very good point. Nobody wants a donation to go to his defense.

Cash is king in this instance. Slip her $5000 under the door. Nobody else has to know about it.
