Thank you for this update, seems even more of a stretch that everything went unnoticed/unheard with a regular basement.

There is an outside entrance to the basement. I recall seeing a cellar door in the exterior photos from the police search.

This source mentions a buckle or fastener that's gold.

I don't recall that being in evidence. I remember when the SCPD under Hart made this announcement and attempted not to reveal who was bound in this belt, it was always frustrating and weird that we could not see the buckle. It seemed to me at the time, the buckle would be more memorable or recognizable.

There was a lot of speculation that it was a woman's belt, a police uniform type belt, blah blah blah, which could have been cleared up with the buckle, more information about the length, etc.

As I recall, it was inadvertently released that this belt was associated with Maureen because the website posted the photo without removing its file name, which had her name in it. So it became clear it was found on/near her. And some cryptic note with the file like, "no glove."

I think the police only said the killer is believed to have handled the belt; I don't recall knowing she was tied with it then.

i wonder if we will see the buckle soon, and if it makes it seem more likely that someone must have been able to ID the belt?

Brainard-Barnes was last seen on July 9, 2007, in New York City after checking out from a Super 8 Motel. She was found bound with three leather belts, one of which was used to tie her ankles.

In Tuesday's filing, prosecutors claimed that burner phones were discovered that connected Heuermann to online searches for sex workers as well as porn searches, audio accounts of rape and a search that read: "autopsy photos of female." He allegedly used the alias "Andy" to communicate with sex workers online, authorities said.

Maureen Brainard-Barnes' 24-year-old daughter, Nicolette Brainard-Barnes, read a statement in what her attorney, Gloria Allred, described as her first public comments on her mother's death. She said she was present at the arraignment to speak for her mom.

“I was only seven years old when my mother was murdered,” Brainard-Barnes said. “Her death drastically changed the trajectory of my life. There are countless times I needed her and she was not there. I remember she read to me every night. And now I can no longer remember the sound of her voice.”

Brainard-Barnes said she was 7-years-old when her mother disappeared and that for years it looked like there might never be an arrest.

“While the loss of my mom has been extremely painful for me, the indictment by the grand jury has brought hope for justice for my mom and my family,” she said, adding that she hopes her mom is “remembered as a loving mother.”

Can you imagine getting a call to go to a stranger's house he leads you to a dark backyard and opens up a cellar door like that?! Yikes! No thanks. Pretty damn creepy.

If anybody is capable of accessing many different homes while escorted it would either be a real estate agent or perhaps an architect.

He doesnt need his home in order to torture people.

And the there are hotels.

As an architect, he'd also have access to lofts, warehouses, commercial buildings, etc.

If the neighbors don't have stories then their security systems surely do. We are talking a high class family with high accessibility to education, healthcare, and clearly income. Paying to keep quiet with your family would be the last option IMO esp considering the children. I mean that would be QUITE the family secret to be hushed by monetary funds but I have been wrong before...

But I agree with you, even the largest basement with the best soundproof quality would still raise concerns with neighbors/family members with coming and going. I mean I know a basement isn't always the hangout destination but to have at least four identified victims without a peep to family living IN THE SAME HOME makes my mind wander. Did they ever mention HM's pets if they had any? Hard to see a dog or puppy not barking upon entrance into the home with new visitors.

So the searches of the home and storage units have given them what they needed to charge him with killing Maureen, and more evidence linking him to Amber. Excellent.

Asian Doe was certainly found closest to the other GB4, and wasn't dismembered like the earlier victims that RH hasn't been charged with killing. (Yet.)

A few neighbors reported bad smells, and noise, so yes people did complain to the landlord and the police didn't investigate. But you're right VERY BOLD of Dauhmer to commit murder in a small apartment and cook, and store human remains. Why did it take so long to get caught!!! If you SMELL something please say SOMETHING!

It still doesn’t make sense to me that in order for it to be 1st degree, it has to be within a certain time frame as the others? Obviously IANAL, but I thought the difference between 1st degree and 2nd degree was whether or not it was premeditated? Someone explain please.
