An aircraft hit the Clutha bar on the banks of the Clyde
in the city with initial reports suggesting multiple injuries
A major rescue operation is under way in central Glasgow after a police helicopter crashed on to the roof of a pub where a music concert was taking place.

Initial reports suggested there were multiple injuries among Friday night revellers as a result of the incident shortly before 11pm at the Clutha pub, a bar close to the city's commercial district.

Some more reaction to the crash here, this time from Clutha patron Grace MacLean.

She was inside the pub at the time of the crash and later told the BBC: "It was fairly busy.

"We were having a nice time and then there was just a whoosh noise.

"There was no bang, no explosion.

"We were all joking that the band had caused the roof to come down.

"They carried on playing at first."

"Then it [the roof] started to come down and people were screaming.

"It's a real testament to the people of Glasgow, people were saying: 'there's the door, come outside'.

"Then people then started to come out with injuries and blood.

"It was only when the paramedics came out and said there's a helicopter on top that I looked up and saw the metal."

"The helicopter is currently embedded in the roof of the pub and the emergency services are doing their very, very best to get the people who are still inside the pub, and probably those who were in the helicopter, to safety."

Mr Murphy said people formed a human chain to help pass unconscious people out of the pub so that "inch by inch, we could get the people out".

He said: "I think the building's only about 18ft, 20ft, tall so part of the helicopter is sticking out, but most of the helicopter is in the building."

"The head of the Scottish government, First Minister Alex Salmond, said it was a "black day for Glasgow and for Scotland."

But, he said, people should take heart from the swift response of emergency responders and the "instinctive courage of ordinary Glaswegians" in the face of adversity.

"As First Minister, it's a day we can take great pride in how we've responded to this extraordinary tragedy," he said. Salmond added that Saturday is St. Andrew's Day, Scotland's national day.

Prime Minister David Cameron extended his deepest sympathies to those who lost loved ones, and he praised emergency responders and "the bravery of ordinary Glaswegians who rushed to help."
 
"Flags will fly at half-mast across Scotland this weekend as a mark of respect and St Andrew's Day events in Glasgow have been cancelled.

First Minister Alex Salmond has asked that saltire and Lion Rampant flags outside Scottish Government and Historic Scotland buildings fly at half-mast over the weekend.

The Scottish Trades Union Congress has called off its annual St Andrew's Day anti-racism march in the city but will go ahead with a planned indoor rally which will now include tributes to those affected by the accident.

About 250 people attended a special service at St Andrew's Cathedral on Saturday afternoon.

Police have set up a telephone number for members of the public who are concerned about relatives who may have been involved in the crash. The number is 0800 092 0410."

GLASGOW, Scotland (AP) — Scottish authorities raised the death toll to eight people Saturday in the crash of a police helicopter into a crowded Glasgow pub, stressing that a rescue and recovery operation is ongoing and it is unclear what they will find when the aircraft's wreckage is moved.

The higher death toll was news that "everybody had been both dreading and expecting," Scottish Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said.

Chief Constable Stephen House said three of the dead were found in the helicopter, which was carrying two police officers and a civilian pilot when it crashed through the roof of The Clutha pub late Friday.

They "were our colleagues," House said, bowing his head and taking a long pause and swallow. He said the five other fatalities were found inside the building and 14 people remain hospitalized with serious injuries...

As work got underway to remove helicopter wreckage from The Clutha in Glasgow, those at the heart of the tragedy spoke of what they had seen in the moments the aircraft crashed into the busy bar.
Prison officer Alleena Coupe was in the pub with her husband Gary, a former firefighter, when the helicopter tore through the ceiling.

in tears reading this,the strength of my fellow glasweigans is immeasurable.

many of my friends are nurses in the hospital where the injured were taken and i know of at least one who treated those people.

horrific :(

How terrible.

I'm surprised that there are quotes in reports from people already criticising the rescue/recovery efforts - like they would have any experience with a helicopter crashing through a roof! Seems to me everyone did the best they could in the crises.
 
Statements from the families of those killed when a police helicopter crashed onto a Glasgow pub in 2013 have been read out at a hearing into the tragedy.

Seven were killed inside the Clutha Bar and three on board the helicopter.

Sheriff principal Craig Turnbull led a minute's silence ahead of the tributes made on the first day of the fatal accident inquiry.
