(CNN)The federal government shut down at midnight Friday as senators continued to scramble to reach a deal to fund the government.

This is the first modern government shutdown with Congress and the White House controlled by the same party, and it comes on the one-year anniversary of President Donald Trump's inauguration.

I feel sorry for all the government workers who are affected by this. Most are still trying to do their jobs and serve the public.

The way Congress has been mismanaging and manipulating the budget process in the last several years needs to stop. They're playing political games with important government funding. That affects your Social Security, infrastructure spending and other important spending priorities for middle class taxpayers. Constantly pushing the budget into austerity is actually causing current and future cuts to Social Security, something we've already paid for over our lifetimes.

Budget bills for the next fiscal year are supposed to be (and always have been) completed by the end of summer. They all need to stop playing games with it or be replaced.
