I actually live in the same area as Kevin and have seen him around before. Small town. I will be keeping my eye out for him. Very well known in the bars in town but always seems gentle and put together. I don't know if drinking is an issue but many others around town have said he is definitely not a "druggie." Another local who knows Kevin mentioned his mom frequently sends him money but can be a little overbearing so perhaps he is taking a break from communicating with family. Hopefully he reappears safe soon.

Winters was last seen on surveillance video depositing money at the First Hawaiian Bank ATM in Kahana on September 2nd, and again on September 3rd.

Maui Police officials say no foul play is suspected at this time.

Winters, described as friendly and free-spirited, was fired from his job the day before he disappeared.

Karen said there is still money in his bank account, and he never picked up his last paycheck.

“Obviously, losing a job is a big deal. But I don’t think it would be a point where you would want to harm yourself. You would probably just get a new job, right? It’s not like he didn’t have money to survive, “said Michael.

The family of 51-year-old Kevin Winters lives in Michigan. His father, Don Winters, said they feel they’ve reached a roadblock as they wait for new information from Maui Police.

“It’s been a dead end, just plain dead end and that’s hard on us,” said Don Winters.

[...]

“And I go now to bed at night, and I want to talk to him,” said Maxine Winters. “And I call his number and he doesn’t answer and it’s just so frustrating.”

“You know, where is he?”

The last time she spoke to him was Sept. 2, 2021.

[...]

Family described him as friendly and free-spirited and said he lost his job of 14 years at a North Shore Hostel where he lived and was forced to move out on Sept. 1.

[...]

Hopp said they have given clues they have found to Maui Police Department, but didn’t get a response. Maui Police said Kevin’s case remains active and there haven’t been any new leads.

In addition, they say there is no evidence of foul play.

But loved ones suspect Kevin Winters was killed.

“Based on everything that we’ve been talking to people in figuring out, there’s just way too many red flags,” said Hopp. “And we just want a proper investigation, he deserves that.”

Karen told Dateline that Kevin, in particular, spent a significant time outdoors. “He did dirt biking,” Karen said. “When he was a teenager, he got in an accident.” She added that because of that accident, Kevin’s right leg is shorter than his left.

[...]

But after 14 years, in late August 2021 Kevin, then 51, lost his job and a place to stay. “He was supposedly terminated for stealing a phone,” Karen said. She added that her brother would never do that. “He was given like seven days or something like that to move out,” she said.

On September 1, Kevin was moving out. Karen said she is unsure of where exactly her brother was moving to, but said he had a storage unit down the street from North Shore Hostel, where he was known to stay sometimes. “He had a garage that had his Jeep in it with a couch,” Karen said.

Karen told Dateline that her brother’s Jeep wasn’t running and had been sitting idle in the storage unit for over a year, so he would typically get around on foot or by bus.

According to Karen, the next day, on September 2, her brother visited Maui Brewing Company in Kahana, Hawaii, about an hour away from his storage unit in Wailuku. “He was there at 8:37 p.m.,” Karen said she found this information from Kevin’s bank history. She added that at 9:45 p.m., Kevin was captured on security footage depositing a check at an ATM at the First Hawaiian Bank near the brewery in Kahana.

[...]

Karen told Dateline that Maxine sent Kevin about $140 each month to cover his living expenses. But Karen said she found it unusual that Kevin would be depositing money. “That was not normal behavior,” Karen said. “I was looking at his statements and I’m like, ‘He rarely even made a deposit.’” Karen said that the check he deposited that evening was for $40.

The next morning, on September 3, 2021, security footage captured Kevin making another deposit at the same ATM, in the same clothing. Karen said this time it was for $190. “He made two deposits and then vanished,” Karen said.

[...]

... “Detectives kept saying, ‘Maybe he, you know, went on a bender or something,’” Karen recalled. “’Or maybe he fell asleep or died contracting Covid.’” But Karen said she was not interested in hearing the theories they offered. “The detective had a different picture he wanted to paint.”

[...]

Karen told Dateline she believes foul play is involved in her brother’s disappearance. “If you were going to go missing, why would you not be withdrawing everything you had?” she said, pointing out that Kevin still had $1,200 in his account.

Michigan native, 51-year-old Kevin Winters, disappeared in Maui, Hawaii, on September 3, 2021. Dateline spoke with Kevin's sister, Karen Hopp, in July 2022. She said that Kevin had been living in Maui for the past 15 years. On September 2, 2021, Kevin visited a brewery in Kahana, Hawaii, and around 9:45 p.m., deposited a check at an ATM at the First Hawaiian Bank nearby. The next morning, on September 3, Kevin was captured on security footage in the same clothing, depositing money at the same ATM. That was the last time Kevin was seen. Karen said she found it highly unusual for her brother to be depositing money and even more unusual that he hadn't called his mother, whom he spoke to every day. Kevin was reported missing on September 19, 2021. He is 5’10” and 160 lbs., and was last seen wearing a white collared shirt, blue jeans, and black dress shoes. In November 2022, Lieutenant Nicholas Angell with the Maui Police Department confirmed that Kevin is still missing and the Maui Police Department is still investigating his disappearance. Anyone with information regarding Kevin's disappearance is asked to contact the Maui Police Department at 808-244-6400.

I wonder who those checks he deposited were from and whether it's a clue? I also wonder why his relatives lean toward foul play rather than an accident or other cause. (Of course it makes sense they would not talk about their reasons.)

I feel for his family and truly hope there is a break in his case soon.

The Vanished podcast did a two parter on him. He sounds like a lovely person. There is lots of info from his parents and siblings about him, his lifestyle, the days surrounding his disappearance, and the disservice done by the police from day one.

There’s a lot more to this story, and they do point suspicion.
