Circumstances of DisappearanceCannon left his family's Kahala home early Christmas morning leaving a note that he planned to hike on Tantalus. His empty car was found at the top of Tantalus the next morning. The resulting search and rescue mission, which at the time was the largest and most expensive ever in Hawaii, failed to find any trace.

Missing hiker case from ’66 still open

What ever happened to Michael Cannon, the 18-year-old Kahala resident who disappeared while hiking Tantalus on Christmas Day 1966?

The fate of Cannon remains a mystery.

Although there have been no recent developments, the case remains open, said missing persons specialist Joe Self of the Honolulu Police Department.

The disappearance of Cannon, part heir to a $5.5 million estate, prompted one of the most expensive and extensive missing person searches in state history. Cannon's mother, Elsa, funded a search that lasted for months and employed national and international help. Efforts to find her missing son included importing specially trained search dogs from Canada and professional mountaineers from California.

She also solicited the help of map-reading mystics and psychics from as far as Ireland and the Netherlands.

As director of the Windward Volunteer Rescue, Richard Davis dedicated some 600 hours searching for the missing hiker.

"I almost lost my job because of the search," said Davis, who was working as an administrator at Fort Shafter. "It was quite an experience."

Davis said his discovery of a T-shirt belonging to Cannon months after the search began may be the only clue left by the missing hiker...

I've checked on Google maps and, as I suppose, it's a heavily wooded area... If Michael fell off a cliff or something, it would be extremelly difficult to locate his body, because of the thick vegetation.

Tantalus park area is located on Oahu just north of Punch Bowl National Cemetery, and to the west of Diamond Head.

<<Two separate hikers came forward saying they had each seen a young man matching Michael's description on December 25. One hiker said he saw a young man around noon climbing over a fence in the area of the Hawaiian Telephone Company's maintenance access road on Tantalus. The other saw a young man hiking on Tantalus Trail No. 2 at about 5 p.m. The young man was near the end of the trail in the area of the bamboo forest. The young man and the witness had a brief discussion about the view overlooking Pali Ridge Highway before the witness hiked away.

The search for Michael was the largest and most expensive search and rescue in Hawaii at the time. Michael was the grandson of August Julius Bernhard Kochs, who was a founder of Victor Chemical Works; he left 11-million-dollar inheritance when he died in November 1960, and 5.5 million of that went to his daughter, Elsa, who was Michael's mother. Half of that would be split between her five kids, which included Michael.>>
