A controversial sale of a collection of Adolf Hitler's artwork has fetched around ($450,000) at auction. The highest price was paid for a painting of Neuschwanstein castle in Bavaria, Southern Germany.
Herbert Weiner, owner of the German auction house, offered to give some of the profits to charities because of the criticism but they all turned him down. He then announced - without consulting anyone - that the donation would go to a local organization if no-one else wanted it, for the preservation of old-town Nuremberg. After he'd got over the unpleasant surprise, the chairman of that organization turned the offer down flat too.
Nuremberg, of course, was the setting for the war crimes trials of the leaders of Hitler's Nazi regime.
