How do they know it's an accident vs. a homicide?

This was the discussion of one of the cases recently. What do they do to determine a person died due to an accident vs. a homicide???

I followed you, Kimster and Pirplgrl, because this is a question I have been wondering about... Specifically in Sarah Majoras' case... And generally in young healthy males leave bars ... Found dead in bodies of water...
