Details of Disappearance
Nolan moved to New York from his family's home in Blacklion, County Cavan, Ireland in 1993. He lived with his sister for eight months, then relocated to San Francisco, California, where he lived with roommates on 39th Avenue in the Sunset District.

Nolan was last seen leaving his house on April 20, 1994. It has been established that he cashed a $500 check at a Market Street bank in San Francisco on the day of his disappearance. He never returned to his residence and has not been heard from again. His resident alien card was left behind.

Nolan's Irish passport has never been recovered. He would have been required to present the document when cashing his check. At the time of his disappearance, he was feeling despondent because he had been unable to find a job.

The majority of Nolan's relatives live in Ireland. His case is being handled by the San Francisco Police Department.

Resident alien card - means he was here as a permanent resident. Means he was likely sponsored - who sponsored him? Since most of his family lives in Ireland, I'm guessing it was his sister, or the sister's husband, if the sister wasn't a citizen. While no husband is explicitly mentioned, it's an assumption I'm making based on "chain migration" immigration rules prioritizing family members of citizens. So if the sister was married to a citizen, then the husband could sponsor her to come over, and then later sponsor Hugh to come over.

What prompted him to move cross country to San Francisco? Did he have any friends or family friends out there? Even if, say, some problems arose with living with his sister, that is well across the country, and leads me to ask who reported him missing and when.

A couple of sites list the address he was living at as 1423 Girkham, Judah, San Francisco, while Charley Project lists him living off 39th Ave. in the Sunset District. Looking at the map, I believe the address is 1423 39th Ave, San Francisco, CA 94122, which is between Judah St. and Kirkham St. (might have been a typo/renamed street), in the Sunset District.

The oag.ca.gov site lists his year of birth as 1971, not 1972. If he was 21 when he disappeared, a month before his birthday, it would be 1972.

Another young man swallowed up by San Francisco! I've come across his case before and I thought there'd be more here.
On the surface it sounds like a suicide, but I'm not convinced. Why cash a check for, the not insignificant amount, of $500 beforehand? Even if he was despondent about not getting a job he certainly didn't have money worries yet. I wonder how despondent he actually was? He also still had options available; he could return to his sister or to Ireland or move on somewhere else.
I really wish there was more from his roommates

They are right about everything... what I have left to say is that he either returned to Ireland or to some other European country... maybe he met a woman who convinced him to go back... I don't really think he committed suicide... although here we all know what a depressed mind is capable of...
whatever the case
rest in peace
