A suspected arsonist behind a string of fires in Iowa has been arrested — and it turns out to be a local firefighter.

Kendall Eugene Rhoads, 60, has been arrested and charged with more than a dozen felony counts of arson, the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office announced on Facebook. Rhoads, of Grundy Center, has served as a firefighter in nearby Holland for six years.

“In April of this year the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office started an investigation into a string of arson fires,” the announcement says. “The fires were mostly ditch fires and some spread into nearby corn fields, other fires included buildings on abandoned properties.”

Apparently, Rhoads would respond to the very fires he allegedly set.

I’m reading American Fire right now by Hesse.
Volunteer firefighter and his girlfriend set the whole town on edge with 62 buildings set ablaze.

John Orr, SoCal fire captain and arson investigator, believed to have set nearly 2,000 fires in a 30 year arson spree. Fire Lover by Wambaugh was a good arson read on him.

This man being arrested does not surprise me.

Sickening & heinous. Anyone that intentionally sets fires like this is a real scum-bag. The property damage alone is certainly incalculable. They also need to take into account that these fires could easily have spread, causing even more damage and putting people's health & lives at risk. This perp. needs to be held liable for all of this - but who knows if that'll happen.
