During an interview with police, Mathew allegedly confessed to killing Jack and disclosed disturbing details about his planning, according to the complaint.

He allegedly said he'd thought of using a knife on the child. Police later found knives in the home that they consider evidence to substantiate the fact that the killing was premeditated, KCRG reports, citing the complaint.

Mathew allegedly said he had been contemplating for a week how to kill the child and, on the night of the killing, he stayed up most of the night thinking about how to kill him, per the complaint.

His joyful, creative, curious, and kind spirit shone in everything he did.

According to police, Marion Police officers were called to a home early Tuesday morning for a report of a 5-year-old boy who was not breathing.

At the scene, paramedics asked the mother how she found the child, who is only identified as “J.S.” The mother told paramedics “his dad strangled him.” An officer asked Schleier if that was true and he admitted to strangling his son.

I can understand how a parent might kill a child in a fit of anger, but who stays up all night planning to murder their own child?? Also, I wonder if the mom was a matter-of-fact about it as it sounds? "His dad strangled him." I notice on both parents facebooks there are photos of their older child, but only one (that I see so far) of Jack, and that is a family portrait. What the @#$# went through these parents' heads?

It's said the Father had been suffering from mental health issues. It sounds like Matt's sister recently moved into the home, to help Mom deal with him and the children.

We see many cases like this at WS, it's the horrific outcome no one ever sees coming, until it's too late. I'll wait to see what details are revealed before commenting further.

My thoughts are with this family as they grieve the loss of Jack.

A notice filed Friday in Linn County court states that Schleier intends to “rely on the defense of insanity at the time of trial” and plans to call an expert witness
