Update: Jason Gage Murder Case
AP) Defense attorneys for a New Mexico man accused of killing a Waterloo man are asking the judge to throw out statements their client made to police.
23-year-old Joseph Lawrence is charged with murder in the March beating death of Jason Gage at Gage's downtown Waterloo apartment.
Authorities have said Lawrence told a girlfriend that he assaulted Gage, who was openly gay, when Gage made sexual advances.
Defense attorney Aaron Hawbaker says investigators only had a tip that Lawrence was involved when they went to his then-girlfriend's home at 2:30 a.m. The attorneys argued that authorities didn't have probable cause to make the arrest.
