Marion Police asking for public's help locating 83-year-old man

MARION, Iowa — Marion Police are now asking for the public's help locating an 83-year-old man who hasn't been seen since Monday.

They issued an Operation Quickfind for Theodore "Ted" Wolf on Tuesday but he has still not been located.

Marion Public Information Officer Tom Daubs says due to his age and medical condition, they wanted to ask for the public's help locating Wolf. Authorities did not reveal the nature of his medical condition.

According to police, he left his home without his cell phone and would have been heading to an appointment in Lisbon via Highway 13 and Highway 30. Wolf never arrived there and there are no known financial transactions on his accounts since he was last seen Monday.

Police also conducted an airplane search along the route and did not find his vehicle, a red 2018 Ford Edge Titanium SUV with an Iowa handicapped license plate EL 779.

Daubs asks if you have seen the vehicle pictured below, in the Linn, Cedar, Jones and Johnson counties, call Marion P.D. at 319-377-1511.

If anyone has any outbuildings or seldom used property, police want you to check them to see if Wolf might be parked there.

Police also released the last known photo of Theodore Wolf (and his red Ford Edge), taken by a DOT camera on January 16th, 2023 at 2:14 pm.

As someone who went to college in Mount Vernon, Mount Vernon road is a pretty straight shot to Lisbon. It intersects with highway 30 right about where Mount Vernon turns into Lisbon. Part of me wonders if he got disoriented and accidentally made a wrong turn either to head west on highway 30 towards Cedar Rapids or South towards Solon and Iowa City on highway one.

Hmm makes you wonder, but also in @Unalienable Rights post upthread it shows him (his vehicle, anyway) in the turn lane about to head east, so then I figure he probably did make that turn: "where it appears Wolf is in the southbound (turn) lane of Highway 13 and about to head east on Mount Vernon Road." But I don't know if LE continued watching to see if he did actually make the turn or might have turned around and came back out? I guess they would have?

Anyway I used the little google maps "car" on street view and "drove" down Mount Vernon Rd for as long as I could (that particular map view quit around the "Camp Tanager" entrance off Mount Vernon Road). I was at least relieved that I didn't see any big water features beside the road that he might have veered into (for a change - seems like so many here do just that). But he could have turned off any of the other drives or streets and I hope locals in that area will please go out and check their properties - at age 83 and missing since the 16th makes my worry-meter peg out to the max.

Wolf, 83, is still missing and was last seen that day heading to an appointment in Lisbon that he never made it to. Police say there are no known financial transactions on his accounts since he was last seen. Due to his age and medical condition, Marion Police asked for the public's help finding him.

The crash happened on Highway 965 at Amana Road but law enforcement was not called to the scene. The two drivers exchanged information and Wolf left heading west on County Road 120 towards Swisher.

I wonder if the minor car crash was before or after the traffic photo of him in the turn lane of Highway 13 and Mount Vernon Rd.? And who was at fault? I'm surprised he exchanged numbers and didn't call LE just because (JMO based on my own elderly Dad, RIP) an elderly man might call because he'd be worried about insurance - which kind of makes me think the accident might have been his fault. At 83 it probably shook him up, poor guy. I tried to enlarge the traffic photo but of course can't see if there is any vehicle damage from that angle, plus if it was really minor there might be nothing but a scratch or a small dent.

On Monday, Marion Police confirmed that Ted Wolf, who had been missing since January 16, was found dead in rural Linn County.

Police say both Ted and his Ford Edge were found a significant distance from the roadway and obscured in some trees, by a person who was walking a dog.

There were no signs of foul play.

Wolf was found more than a month after he was first reported missing when the 83-year-old was supposed to be driving to Lisbon for an appointment.
