Snapping turtle is euthenized after popular science teacher fed it a sick puppy during one of his classes

Idaho officials have euthanized a snapping turtle at the center of an investigation over whether a long time biology teacher gave it a sick puppy to eat in front of students.

Robert Crosland, of Preston Junior High School, reportedly fed a sick puppy to a turtle last Wednesday after classes ended for the day, Superintendent Marc Gee said in a news release.

The Idaho State Department of Agriculture in a statement Friday says snapping turtles are an invasive species in Idaho requiring a permit. Officials seized the turtle Tuesday and euthanized it Wednesday.

Trial to begin Thursday for Idaho biology teacher

An Idaho biology teacher accused of feeding a live puppy to a snapping turtle in front of students will go on trial beginning Thursday.

Preston Junior High School teacher Robert Crosland was charged with one count of misdemeanor animal cruelty.

He has pleaded not guilty and will face a two-day jury trial. If convicted, Crosland faces up to six months in jail and a $5,000 fine.

Thursday marked the start of the Robert Crosland trial. Crosland, a Preston Junior High biology teacher, is charged with one count of animal cruelty after he allegedly fed a sick puppy to a snapping turtle in March.

Jury selection began around 10 a.m. and ended around 5:30 p.m., when seven jurors, five men and three women, were selected.

Opening statements are expected to begin Friday morning.

The court will be back in session at 9 a.m., starting with jury instructions.
