Press Release
April 29, 2019

Riggins, Idaho

On April 26, 2019, Idaho County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch received a call advising of an individual who jumped in the water approximately 15 miles up the Big Salmon at Twin Beaches and they were now unable to locate him.

34 year-old Keawe Pestana, of Boise, jumped into the river in an attempt to rescue three children who had fallen out of a canoe. The children were wearing life jackets and made it to safety. Mr. Pestana surfaced briefly, but was not seen again.

Family searched the river until Idaho County Sheriff’s Office personnel arrived to assist. BLM also assisted in searching the area, along with Life Flight, which flew along the river searching for Mr. Pestana.

On Saturday and Sunday, the search continued with ICSO personnel, BLM, and Idaho County Posse members.

Efforts to locate Mr. Pestana will continue by driving the river road daily. People who recreate on the river are encouraged to call the Sheriff’s Office with any information.

In the wake of this tragic event, the Idaho County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind everyone that even with the increasing springtime temperatures, the Salmon River remains cold and extremely dangerous. Always wear a life jacket when getting in or around water.

"A body recovered Sunday in the Salmon River near Riggins has been identified as 34-year-old Keawe Pestana, who went missing a month ago.

Pestana, of Boise, dove into the Salmon River April 26 to try and rescue three children who fell into the river after a canoe flipped. The three juveniles were wearing life jackets and floated to safety. Pestana was seen briefly floating at the surface, but went under and was not located despite an intense search of the area.

His body was discovered in an eddy Sunday by a fisherman boating on the Salmon near Riggins, Idaho County Sheriff Doug Giddings said."
