''Unsolved Cold Case: Linda Hatfield

On May 29, 1984, 31-year-old Linda Hatfield went to work her shift at the Hunt Club in Garden City, Idaho. When Linda finished her shift at 1:00 a.m., a bouncer from the Hunt Club walked her to her vehicle in the parking lot and watched her drive off towards her home in Middleton. That was the last confirmed sighting of Linda Hatfield.

At about 2 a.m., witnesses at an address in Middleton reported seeing Linda’s car – a T-Bird – and another vehicle parked in the street. The witnesses reportedly heard arguing between who they believed to be a man and woman in the street.

At 8:30 a.m., Linda’s T-Bird was found in a parking lot in the 2700 block of S. Curtis Rd. in Boise. Linda had not yet been reported missing, so her vehicle was left in the lot. When her husband reported her missing to the Canyon County Sheriff’s Office on June 1, the Ada County Sheriff’s Office and Boise Police Department responded to process her vehicle.

By June 4, 1984, enough evidence was observed by several agencies to change Linda’s case from a missing person case to a homicide. In November 1984, Linda’s wallet and credit cards were found in the recently drained New York Canal. By June 1987, the courts ruled that there was clear and convincing evidence that Linda was deceased.

In 1988, a man came forward with a possible lead – he indicated that Linda had recently come into some money and may have been set up to be robbed by several individuals. One primary suspect was Cary Burgess who was known to frequent The Hunt Club.

On the evening of Linda’s disappearance, Burgess arrived at a family member’s house around 2 a.m. to 3 a.m, covered in mud, in possession of a woman’s wedding ring set, and appearing manic.

On July 6, 1984, Burgess abducted and raped a woman in Boise. He was later convicted. Burgess died of a terminal illness in prison in 2001.

To date, Linda’s remains have never been found. Detectives are hoping to learn more about Linda’s missing wedding ring set, the location of her remains, and any information about the night of her disappearance.

Our detectives are currently reanalyzing important items of evidence in the hope that they reveal new clues surrounding Linda’s disappearance.

Just for clarification because it kind of threw me, her wallet and ID were located in the New York Canal which is located in Boise, Idaho.

"The New York Canal is a 41-mile irrigation canal in Boise, Idaho, diverting water from the Boise River to Lake Lowell."
