SHORTY PEAK — Search teams continued to look for Mark Brackebusch, 73, Tuesday in the area around the Shorty Peak trailhead in northwestern Boundary County.

Brackebusch was reported missing on Thursday, Aug. 31, after a friend checked his residence after not hearing from the man for a few days.

Crews from the Kootenai County Volunteer Search and Rescue team joined Boundary

County searchers again Tuesday to continue searching in the Shorty Peak area on foot.

He is an avid hiker. He left his Idaho Residence without closing garage, windows, or locking doors. His vehicle was located at the Shorty Peak Trail Head USFS RD 2251 Boundary County Idaho. He has residences in Bonner's Ferry Id and Olympia Washington.

Details of Disappearance​

Brackebusch was last seen in Bonners Ferry, Idaho on August 19, 2023. He left home without closing his windows or garage, and without locking his doors, and has never been heard from again. He was not reported missing until August 31.

After his disappearance, his vehicle was found at the Shorty Peak trailhead on U.S. Forest Service Road 2251. An extensive search turned up no indication of his whereabouts.

Brackebusch has residences in both Bonners Ferry and in Olympia, Washington. Authorities believe he may have gotten lost while hiking and died of exposure, but his remains have never been found.
