Matt Schultz, a prominent local land developer, is believed to have left his Meridian home to explore land in Owyhee County. His family said he hasn’t been seen or heard from since. Schultz, 50, was seen leaving his home on South Calusa Avenue in a light green 2021 Toyota Tacoma on Wednesday afternoon.

His last cell phone ping came from 60 miles south of the Bennett Mountains in Owyhee County, possibly in the Bruneau Canyon area on that same day. “There’s been no phone activity since then,” his niece Elise Woolstenhulme told the Idaho Statesman in a phone interview. “Nothing, nothing at all as far as communication.” A breakthrough in the search came Sunday afternoon when a volunteer pilot spotted Schultz’s truck from the air 30 miles from his last phone ping.

The pilot who spotted the truck was a friend of Matt Schultz from Pocatello. Submitted Schultz usually spends weekdays living alone at his home in Meridian and then returns to Pocatello on weekends to his home where his wife and children live. One of his favorite hobbies is flying drones. He often spends his free time exploring areas where he can fly them.

“He’s not the greatest communicator about what he’s going to do or where he’s going go,” Woolstenhulme said. “And so Wednesday, when he went out to fly his drone, he didn’t tell anybody where he was going. But it’s not unusual that his wife Robyn doesn’t hear from him because he’s flying his drone. By Thursday, she was concerned.” On Friday, she filed a missing persons report with police. Meridian officers conducted a wellness check on his home but he was not there.

Last week, Schultz took drone footage of the Bruneau Canyon area and put video of it on YouTube. He told his son he wanted to return to the area soon.

If that drone crashed anywhere he may have attempted to hike to wherever it is to retrieve it. The terrain in the canyon was very rough and I doubt a regular phone signal could get out.

I hope he's ok and that they are searching that area closely. Drones would probably speed up a canyon search.

He must have belonged to a drone group. They are posting about searching for him.

OWYHEE COUNTY, Idaho — A body was found Sunday night in the vicinity of a missing man's truck in Owyhee County near Black Canyon, the sheriff's office confirms.

The sheriff's office cannot yet confirm the identity, said Owyhee County victim witness coordinator Jennifer Maund, but it has been turned over to the coroner for identification.

Matthew Schultz, 50, is a Pocatello resident who traveled into the outdoors last week and was not heard or seen from since July 6. It is not yet officially confirmed if the body found is related to Schultz's disappearance.

However, his family told KTVB Monday morning the body found is Schultz.

Elise Woolstenhulme, Schultz's niece, said that he died immediately from the injuries he sustained after falling down a 50-foot ravine.

"It is with great sadness that the family of Matt Schultz confirms that his body has been found. Matt passed away doing something he loved, but he loved nothing more than his wife and children. He will be greatly missed by them and all that knew him. We ask for privacy at this time as we grieve the loss of Matt. Funeral arrangements will be forthcoming and shared as they are determined. We would like to thank the Owyhee, Meridian, and Malheur police departments, and the countless volunteers who drove and flew for hours in their extraordinary efforts in searching for Matt," they said in a statement.

How terrible! So sad for his family, especially the little twins who will never know their Dad. RIP.
