... three men interrupted a burglary in progress at a home...
[Google Maps link] 9300 block of Golden Rule Mine Road at around 11:30 am Thursday (southeast part of rural St. Clair County)
...victims with gunshot wounds outside of a home
...victims’ ages are 25, 47, and 50
One man is dead, a second man was airlifted to a St. Louis hospital with critical injuries, and the third victim was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
...“vehicle of interest” - ...blue or grey Chevrolet Lumina with a light bar with a yellow light on top
...motive in the burglary or shooting is unknown at this time
...victims were unarmed before they were shot. It’s unclear if the shooting was part of a random or targeted attack.
Some residents who live in the area suspect the shooting was not random because the location was in a rural, isolated area.
...it’s too soon to know whether this was a random crime.
...contact the Major Case Squad through the Freeburg Police Department with any tips at 618-539-3132

I agree with "some residents" who believe this seems like a targeted crime. Why would the murdering burglar(s) choose that day, time, and location? What were they attempting to steal? I wonder why the 3 victims went to the home when they did. Where were they before and where were they going afterwards? Did any or all of them live at the address? Who knew their destination and plans for the day? All questions investigators are asking, I'm sure. Chevy Lumina's were last manufactured in 2013. I doubt there are very many with a yellow light on the roof running around New Athens. Hopefully investigators can locate video footage of the car heading out that way. That area is quite rural. Most likely there are home/business surveillance and trail cams along the surrounding routes. MOO
My thoughts go out to the victims and their loved ones.
