UPDATE: Rockford Police Chief Carla Redd informed 13 WREX Sunday evening additional details about the case.
According to Redd, the victim's 6-year-old sister came home to tell her mother that her older sister had been kidnapped while they were playing outside.
The 10-year-old girl was found nearby, unresponsive and rushed to a local hospital where she was pronounced deceased.
Rockford Police rushed to the scene and found the alleged suspect nearby with the assistance of a K-9 officer.
Blue Island Man Charged with Kidnapping, Murder, and Attempted Murder
ROCKFORD, IL – On Saturday, July 8, 2023, Rockford Police officers were dispatched at approximately 12:07 p.m. in response to a call from a woman who advised that her 6-year-old daughter came home and stated that a man took her 10-year-old sister.
At approximately 12:40 p.m., Rockford Police officers were flagged down by a male who reported locating an unresponsive juvenile girl outside of a residence in the 1200 block of 9th Avenue. Upon arrival, officers located the child and began administrating CPR. Rockford Fire Department arrived on scene and transported the child to a local hospital where she was pronounced deceased.
A perimeter was immediately established and a Rockford Police officer assigned with a K9 Unit, located a man that matched the description of a suspect near 9th Street and Woodruff. The man, later identified as Antonio Monroe, was taken into custody after a brief struggle. He was taken to a local hospital for an unrelated issue and once released, Monroe will be transported to the Winnebago County Jail.
After a review of the facts of the case, The Winnebago County State’s Attorney’s Office authorized the following charges:
Antonio Monroe, 44, Blue Island First Degree Murder Attempted Murder
Kidnapping (2 counts) Aggravated Battery/Strangulation
As with any and all investigations, there may be further charges and arrests.
