JOLIET, IL — The Will County Coroner's Office is helping sheriff's deputies determine the identity of a body discovered Wednesday afternoon in a wooded area along the 700 block of Patterson Road outside Joliet city limits.
The Will County Sheriff's Office said the human remains were found around 2:45 p.m. by people new to the area. The people indicated they were walking outside, exploring the area, when they found the remains.
Numerous bones, including a human skull, a femur bone and ribs, were discovered scattered about the area, which is heavily wooded, the sheriff's office said.
On Thursday morning, with the assistance of cadaver dogs from the DuPage County Sheriff's Office, Will County detectives and CSI personnel conducted a thorough search of the area, finding additional bones and other items of evidentiary value, authorities said.
The Will County Sheriff's Office said it is trying to determine the length of time the remains could have been located on the property.
Crest Hill Police Chief Ed Clark told Joliet Patch on Thursday afternoon that his agency has been in contact with the Will County Sheriff's Office in regard to the skeletal remains found Wednesday. Crest Hill police have been investigating the disappearance of 50-year-old Wendy Gessing, who vanished last June during her shift at the Pizza By Marchelloni Restaurant off Theodore Street in Crest Hill. Gessing worked there for several years, and the business is owned by her long-time boyfriend, Scott Harris.
Gessing and Harris shared a house on Hosmer Lane in Crest Hill.
Gessing's vehicle was discovered days after her disappearance in Joliet along the dead-end stretch of Buell Avenue near Western Avenue.
Chief Clark told Patch on Thursday that he expects the laboratory testing conducted by Will County may take days before the identity of the human remains found on Patterson Road is positively known.
