IL - Lyons Police Dig For Bodies Of Mother (2015) & Sister (2019), Brothers Say Buried In Yard, 2021

Crews prepare to excavate backyard of Lyons home where brothers claim mother, sister are buried

LYONS, Ill. (WLS) -- Investigators are prepared to excavate a backyard in southwest suburban Lyons to search for bodies that could be buried there,

Digging is expected to begin Saturday in the backyard after two brothers said their family members are buried there.

The brothers told police their mom was pushed down the stairs by their sister in December 2015, and died sometime the following week from her head injury. Police said she was in her late 70s. The brothers then said their sisters got sick and died in 2019. Police said she was 42.

The state of Illinois has no record of their deaths. Police said all evidence points to the bodies being in the yard; they have no evidence their mother is in Connecticut, or that the sister is with other family.

Both brothers were taken for a physical and mental evaluation at a hospital, but have not been placed under arrest. But that could change if evidence of human remains are found Saturday, as the concealment of a death is a class 4 felony in Illinois.

Brothers Face Charges After Remains of Mother, Sister Found in Yard of Lyons Home Last Summer

Two brothers who told authorities their mother and sister were buried in a suburban Lyons backyard are now facing charges in connection with their deaths, authorities announced Thursday.

According to police, Michael and John Lelko are currently in custody and facing several charges in connection with the case, which began last summer when human remains were found in the yard of a house that the two brothers were living in.

Michael Lelko is facing charges of concealment of a death, and is expected to face federal charges in connection to Social Security checks, which the brothers allegedly continued to cash even after their mother died in 2015.

John Lelko is also potentially facing charges.
