I wonder if this women is another suspected victim of Maury Travis like several other African American women killed in IL/MO around this time (Travis was arrested in June 2002 and claimed to have killed 17 women).

More comprehensive information from the Illinois State Police site Unsolved Crimes
COLLINSVILLE, IL (March 21, 2002) On March 11, 2002, at approximately 1:57 p.m., the Illinois State Police responded to a complaint concerning the discovery of human skeletal remains near mile post 23 on Interstate 70 (eastbound). The complaint originated from workers of the Illinois Department of Transportation who were working in the vicinity and discovered the remains. The remains were removed from the scene and transported to the Madison County Morgue in Edwardsville, Illinois, where an autopsy was conducted on March 12, 2002. The autopsy did not determine a cause of death, however further examination by forensic anthropologists revealed the following information: The skeletal remains are of a black female, approximately 5' 1" - 5' 6" in height (5' 3" believed to the most accurate). There is no estimate of weight and the approximate age is between 24-30 years old. It is believed the remains have been at this location for approximately 4-6 months. The skeletal remains were almost completely intact and clad in a pair of gray colored Second Skins brand shorts (size: medium) with rhinestones and a red and white colored check flannel style Tommy Hilfiger button down man's style shirt (size: XL). In addition, a man's style "gold" nuggett style ring with two glass stones was found with the remains. The ring originally held four stones in the setting. The ring was determined to be costume jewelry and is a size 7 1/4. Also found were two bracelets. The one bracelet is a metal hoop, approximately 3 inches in diameter, smooth on one side with a channel on the other side. A ring of black onyx beads on elastic string fits into the channel bracelet. The second bracelet is a combination of three separate bracelets. The second bracelet has numerous plastic beads (yellow, green, black, mauve, and brown) strung with thin elastic string that could be stretched. The three separate bracelets were gathered by a single, oval shaped metallic ring with a small hole at one end that appeared to be for the purpose of hanging a charm.
Contact Information: Anyone with information concerning the identity of the victim or the circumstances surrounding her death are urged to contact Illinois State Police,Zone 6 Investigations at 618/346-3782, or Crimestoppers at 1-866-371-TIPS(8477).

COLLINSVILLE, IL (June 18, 2002) – On June 18, 2002, the Illinois State Police is releasing computer recreation images of a black female victim that was originally discovered on March 11, 2002, near mile post 23 on Interstate 70 (eastbound). The images reflect how the victim may have looked prior to her death. The skeletal remains of the victim were originally discovered by Illinois Department of Transportation workers near an underpass in rural Madison County, Illinois. A subsequent autopsy could not determine the cause of death and it is believed that the victim had been deceased for several months. Additional information concerning the clothing and jewelry worn by the victim can be found in the March 21, 2002 article on this page.

Circumstances of Discovery
The remains of this victim were discovered by Illinois Department of Transportation workers near the Silver Creek overpass in Collinsville, rural Madison County, Illinois on March 11, 2002. The location is near mile 23 on eastbound Interstate 70.

She is thought be a victim of serial killer Maury Troy Travis, who is also a suspect in the homicides of two other unidentified victims: 327UFIL and 302UFIL.

Police believe the three were raped, tortured and killed by Travis, with some of the slayings videotaped. But Travis never identified the three women, and he hanged himself in a St. Louis jail cell three days after he was charged with three other killings.

*Do yall think this may be connected?

*Travis Maury's basement room held all the evidence detectives needed to connect him to the murders of several sex workers he'd killed and discarded in remote places around St. Louis, Missouri. But while incarcerated, officers failed to notice his plan to take his own life before it was too late.

On March 11, 2002, another body was discovered along I-70 near Highland, Illinois, and was identified earlier this year as Crystal Lay.
Lay was last seen in St. Louis, Missouri, sometime during October 2002. She has never been heard from again. Few details are available in her case.
  • Age 36 years old
  • Height and Weight 5'0, 120 pounds
  • Distinguishing Characteristics: African-American female. Brown hair. One of Lay's eyes is blue and the other is green. One of her eyes has poor vision. Lay may use the first name Candy. Her ears are double-pierced, and she has a gap between her upper teeth and a scar on the top of her hand from a skin graft.
Her date of disappearance is listed as October 2002. No wonder she wasn't connected sooner. I wonder if that was when she was reported missing.
