[h=1]Body's identity remains a mystery six months after it was discovered in Rockford garbage can[/h]
ROCKFORD - The gender, identity and cause of death of a decomposed body remain a mystery six months after it was discovered rotting in a duct-taped garbage can inside a Market Street apartment.

Considered a suspicious death by Rockford Police Department detectives, there is no evidence so far to prove whether the person was a homicide victim, Lt. Kurt Whisenand said.
Authorities had a lead on the identity but DNA testing proved it was not that person. And the size of the bones and other evidence were not a match for known missing persons from the area, Hintz said.

A report from the forensic anthropologist is pending that will reveal if the body is that of a male or female, approximate age, weight, height and race, Hintz said.
DNA testing is ready to proceed after the report is complete. But Hintz said forensic scientists would need a DNA sample to compare it with in order to prove the identity of the body.

They must know who was living there in the apt, perhaps they are hoping to get a confession and an identity without using Namus? IDK. I just checked and did not find anything new on this story.

UPDATE: ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) – The man who police say owned an apartment where a dead body was found more than a year ago pleads guilty in court today.

54-year old Bradley Carlson is sentenced to two-years in prison after being charged with unlawful use of a weapon by a felon. Back in July of 2016, investigators say they found a partially decomposed body in a trash can in the apartment Carlson owned in the 600 block of Market Street. The identity of the person is not yet known.

And older article in the same link - from July 6, 2016:
UPDATE: ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) -- A Market Street apartment building is now a crime scene after police find a partially decomposed body inside a trash can.

Right now authorities are searching the upstairs apartment for clues but they say it's a mess and believe it could take them a while to piece information together. They also say the fact the body has already started decomposing and was found in a trash can may make identifying the victim difficult.

He is not in Namus and it seems only some of Illinois UID cases get listed there.

@Niner a question since you have good access to legal/court records & are wonderful at interpreting them for us mere humans... Is there anything in the record of the convicted man that is online in court records and shows if his victim has now been ID? Just trying to think around the issue of him not being in Namus.

This decedent was/remains were found in Chicago, Cook County.

The thread concerns a decedent was/remains were found in Rockford, Winnebago County.

About an hour & a half drive per Google Maps.

You did bring the only set of remains found in Illinois in July of 2016, so now I'm curious!

We've seen worse, but I doubt it. More likely the NAMUS entries are incomplete imho.

The Winnebago County Coroner's Office has been working for most of the past year to identify decomposed human remains which were found in a garbage can outside an apartment building on Market Street in Rockford in July.

The coroner's office later determined it was a middle-aged Caucasian male. Tests indicate lower-spine degeneration, which means the man may have walked a lot.

Winnebago County coroner Bill Hintz said the forensic information helps with the bigger picture.

"The problem is," he said, "if we have nothing to compare it to, if this person has never been in any sort of computerized system where DNA will be, or where anything has been, and obviously his dental records aren’t anywhere, it’s very difficult to try and match it up."

Hintz said his office submitted bone records to an online database.

“This is our final straw," he said. "If this doesn’t show anything, besides putting it back out under the public again, I don’t think there’s anything else we’ll be able to do."

Hintz said the next step would be a proper burial.

“He is somebody," he said. "Whoever he is, he is somebody, and we want to take good care of him."

I couldn't find unidentified reports on the Illinois state or Winnebago coroner office website.

As an aside; the virtual assistant comes up with stuff about casino's when I ask a question about unidentified remains reports.....I guess identifying Jane en John Does in Illinois is a complete gamble. :)
