Cold Case: 'Hearing her voice instilled why I’m doing this'
By MARY SCHENK mschenk@news-gazette.com

''Betsy Alfonso was 2 when Wallace went missing in July 1990. Now an Urbana police sergeant, wife and mother of two, she hopes talking about the 30th anniversary of Wallace’s disappearance will generate new leads.

“Anyone that really remembers having contact with her around that time. What would she have said? Did she have other plans and didn’t reach out to church members? If anyone knew why she would have been at Clark-Lindsey. If anyone remembers seeing the vehicle on Vawter (Street) or anyone around it or knows how it got parked there,” were some of the puzzle pieces Alfonso would like to have.

''She is now the 10th member of the Urbana Police Department to do a deep dive into why Wallace, who would now be 64, went missing.''

Both parents had mental-health issues, she said.

They lost one daughter, Tammy, at age 4, in a fire, in the early 1960s. Two other daughters died as adults many years after Wallace went missing.''

''Through about 100 interviews done over the years, Alfonso said police learned that Wallace moved frequently, often bought new furniture and attended several different churches.''

''Last fall, she enlisted the aid of retired Officer Larry Jacobsen, the third investigator to have the case in the 1990s.

“I never let go,” said Jacobsen, 63, even though he’s been retired since 2008. He now works part-time for the University of Illinois dean of students on discipline cases.

Every time Jacobsen hears of remains being found, he calls the department to make sure someone checks to see if they might be Wallace’s. He did that last fall, getting Alfonso’s attention''.

I am taking it they have looked at this Jane Doe as a possible match. The National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs)

This JD was found the same date she went missing - about 2 1/2 hours away.
Height and weight are close, along with age range.

It would be an easy rule out. The Doe has an upper denture plate.

This Jane Doe isn't listed as a rule-out on NamUs, but since Theresa was seen on the day this body was found, it's pretty unlikely they're the same person (given the extent of Doe's composition).

I thought the same thing, but sometimes dates are wrong with reporting etc..

I did receive an email back from the detective on the case. This JD has been ruled out.

Thank you for your interest in this case and reaching out. This unidentified body has been ruled out and is not Theresa. We appreciate you taking the time to research this and make sure we were aware of it.

Take care,

Sgt. Betsy Alfonso

Details of Disappearance

Wallace was last seen on July 20, 1990. She made many calls from her apartment in the 1100 block of south Lierman Avenue in Urbana, Illinois that day. She was last seen near her apartment; she said she was going to the library, but it's unclear whether she ever arrived there.

That evening, her silver 1985 Chrysler LeBaron was seen at the Clark-Lindsey Village, a retirement home on Windsor Road. She had no connections to the retirement home and it's unclear why her car was there. She has never been heard from again. At the time of her disappearance, she was connected with the New Life Church and was "very religious." Her church friends contacted her mother after she missed services, and her mother reported her missing on July 24.

Her car was found abandoned on July 28, eight days after her disappearance, in the 2000 block of south Vawter Street. A photo of it is posted with this case summary. Strangely, there were three couch cushions left in the backseat of the car; authorities could not determine their source. Although Wallace frequently shopped at a local furniture store, there wasn't a couch sold there that matched the cushions.

Wallace usually kept religious pamphlets scattered in the front compartment of her car, but there was no such material there when it was found. The steering wheel was tilted all the way up, further than a driver of Wallace's height would have needed; police think someone else was the last driver. Her purse, keys and other personal belongings weren't in the car and they have never been found.

Wallace may frequent convenience stores and fast food restaurants. Her disappearance remains unsolved.
