She died of strangulation. 19 year old college sophomore, simply walking on campus and dead a few minutes later.

Murder suspect grew frustrated when UIC student didn’t react to his catcalls, prosecutors allege

A parolee charged with killing a University of Illinois at Chicago honor student spotted her as she walked alone past a CTA Blue Line stop on campus early Saturday morning and grew angered when she ignored his repeated attempts to talk, Cook County prosecutors alleged Tuesday.

As Ruth George reached her car in a UIC parking garage, prosecutors said, Donald Thurman grabbed her around the neck from behind and put her in a chokehold. With his arm still wrapped around her neck, Thurman dragged an unconscious George to her car and threw her in the back seat, where he sexually assaulted her, prosecutors said.

Thank you for starting this thread. Beyond disturbing. What a sick individual. My heart goes out to her family and friends.

Thurman already had a criminal past, having been sentenced in August 2016 to six years in prison for stealing a woman’s iPhone and fleeing in a stolen vehicle. He was paroled in December 2018. Though police found the jacket he wore when he allegedly murdered George at a home, Thurman was considered homeless, “bouncing from place to place,” his court-appointed attorney, Assistant Public Defender Valerie Panozzo, said, according to the Tribune. Panozzo also said Thurman had a history of mental health problems.

Sickening.

"history of mental health problems" means this case may take years to come to trial. When the parade of psychiatrists begins, everything else stops.

He would have done this anyway. Just his twisted attempt to blame the victim for not being "nice" to him.

I totally agree. If she'd been 'nice' to him and flirted, he'd still have followed her and raped and killed her. Even in the highly unlikely event that she'd stopped to talk with him, invited him go for a coffee, and then made a date for next week, he'd have followed her and raped and murdered her. She was totally out of his league, he knew he'd never get to have sex with that kind of woman unless he raped her, and he saw his chance when she walked into an isolated parking garage.

Sadly, there are predators out there, like lions hiding in the grass on the savannah.
