"Witek Dziedziecki" is the alias of an unknown man who was admitted into a hospital in 2006 after experiencing chest pains. He became a ward of the state as a result of various disabilities and was unable to leave the hospital.

It is theorized the man was dropped off at the hospital because his former caretakers were unable to provide for him. He is possibly of Romanian or Polish origin. The man stated he was possibly from New York.

All inquiries related to the name he provided proved unsuccessful with identifying him.

Witek Doe, who is developmentally disabled and speaks very little, lives in a Skokie community-based home. He told police he is Witek Dziedziecki from New York City, but a search turned up nothing.

He's been in state care since 2006, when he walked into Northwestern Memorial and said his chest was hurting. He was well-dressed, with new shoes and a recent haircut, indicating he wasn't homeless. Authorities believe someone dropped him off. His caretakers think he is Polish or Romanian, though translators haven't helped uncover much information.

I didn’t see this case talked about here yet. I’m polish and had something to kinda input, Polish names are very proper and nicknames are very unlikely to be legal given names. Witek is short for Witold. Dziedziecki is also not a very common surname. When I searched that name in ancestry, I saw a grave for a Vitek Dziedziecki, and I didn’t see any Ellis island document but often “w” would have been changed to “v” in favor of the English pronunciation, so I thought possible familial connection there. He said he thought he was from New York and that grave is from New York. If anyone is better at me at navigating ancestry and can find more on that, I’d be interested to see where that goes.

Here he is on the unidentified wiki, as well as some other sources talking about his case.

Identities of 5 in state care elude authorities

I feel like whoever he was living with probably weren't able to care for him anymore, so they left him at the hospital. If he was 40-50 when he was found, it's possible his parents were getting older and couldn't look after him anymore, so they left him somewhere they thought he'd be safe.

it sounds that way because they said he appeared well cared for.
