Missing Person Bulletin

Family and friends worried about blind Owen County man missing two weeks

The last time Violet Reno saw her son was Aug. 31, when she dropped him off at the camper in Patricksburg where he'd been living the past year.

The 41-year-old, nearly blind, Owen County man has since disappeared. A cadaver dog found nothing on the property around his camper. And a search untaken by 25 volunteers, friends and family members through thick woods on Sept. 10 turned up no clues.

Chris Callas had been staying with his mom the week before, recovering from surgery to repair a detached retina in his left eye, his good eye. Callas is blind in his right eye.

Reno got worried when she hadn't heard from Callas for a few days and was unable to reach him on his cell phone. She said the two communicated nearly every day.

She said one of the last people who saw Callas was a neighbor to the camper property who said he found Callas shoeless and disoriented in a field behind the camper on Sept. 3. He said he took the man back to the camper and said he should go inside and call his mother.

She never got a call. Her son is now listed on Indiana's Missing Persons Bulletin. The Owen County Sheriff's Department issued a flyer with a photo of Callas that asks anyone with information about his whereabouts to call the department at 812-829-4874.

There's so little info about this poor guy. Have they checked with his friends? Is there no current address for him? Did he leave his personal items behind?

I found the school; there are some pretty big drainage ponds or whatever they are in that area. Can't tell how deep they are. "Shoeless and disoriented" is worrisome.

If he was lost, he should have been calling for help; no one heard him?

According to the mother of his daughter, Callas went missing right after he underwent eye surgery.

"He is literally almost blind," she said. "The number one thing that threw me off guard and I got the most grief stricken feeling I've had in my life is the fact that his medication that he took for his surgery, everything he would need, all his medications have not been touched since the day he went missing."

According to the family, the office says that due to the small size of their department, there is little they can do. They did say the police searched the area Callas was last seen with K9's, but had no luck.

"I don't want to keep hearing all this he say she say," his daughters mother said. "I want facts, regardless of the outcome, I want to bring him home for my daughter."

Sad outcome.

On Thursday, Owen County dispatchers received a call about a body spotted in a pond on Chambers Street in Patricksburg. The body was recovered from the pond and identified as Callas.

The pond was only 40 yards from Callas’ camper, according to the sheriff’s department.

No foul play is suspected in Callas’ death, the sheriff’s department said.
