Dillon Burgan, 29, of Madison, was last seen walking into a heavily wooded area behind an acquaintance’s house on State Road 135, about four miles south of Salem, local law enforcement said.

Burgan’s family contacted the Washington County Sheriff’s Office to report the man as missing.

The search for Burgan began Thursday evening and continued through the weekend and involved utilizing off-road vehicles, a K-9 unit and a helicopter to search the area where he is believed to have disappeared.

Burgan was last seen wearing gray and orange shorts, according to authorities.

Investigators from the Indiana State Police post in Sellersburg are investigating the disappearance of Dillon W. Burgan after he was last seen walking into a wooded area south of Salem last week.

On Thursday, July 29, 2021, family members of 29-year-old Dillon W. Burgan, of Madison, Indiana, contacted the Washington County Sheriff’s Department to report Burgan as missing.

A search for Burgan began on Thursday evening and continued on Friday and Saturday. Officers and volunteers from the Washington County Sheriff’s Department, the Salem Police Department, Indiana Conservation Officers, The Gibson Township Fire Department, and the Southern Indiana Search and Rescue Association took part in the search.

The investigation included an extensive ground search utilizing off-road vehicles and K9.

On Saturday evening, ISP detectives assumed the investigation, and on Monday, an ISP helicopter searched the area believed to be where Burgan was last seen.

ISP looking for missing Indiana man

According to ISP Sgt. Carey Huls, on July 29, Dillon Burgan walked into the woods behind a friend’s house south of Salem and didn’t return. The house is on State Road 135.

Burgan was last seen wearing orange and gray shorts, police said. He is white with tattoos, including on his neck. He might have a facial piercing near his eye as well.

This sounds sad. A lone walk-about, planning on no return? Perhaps he just wanted to be alone and got lost. SMH.

Indiana State Police Investigating Missing Person

Southern Indiana - August 2, 2021: Investigators from the Indiana State Police (ISP) in Sellersburg are investigating the disappearance of a Southern Indiana man after he was last seen walking into a wooded area south of Salem last week.

On Thursday, July 29, 2021, family members of Dillon W. Burgan, 29, of Madison, Indiana, contacted the Washington County Sheriff's Department to report Burgan as missing. Dillon Burgan was last seen walking into a heavily wooded area behind an acquaintance's house on SR 135, approximately four miles south of Salem, Indiana, earlier that day.

A search for Burgan began on Thursday evening and continued thru Friday and Saturday. Officers and volunteers from the Washington County Sheriff's Department, the Salem Police Department, Indiana Conservation Officers, The Gibson Township Fire Department, and the Southern Indiana Search and Rescue Association took part in the search. He has a twin sister who is posting on Facebook a local neighborhood group she is begging for searchers to help search the woods.

UPDATE: Indiana State Police say Dillon Burgan was found dead late Tuesday and a death investigation is now underway.

A farmer contacted Washington County Sheriff Brent Miller after finding an article of clothing in one of his fields. The farm is located off SR-135, approximately 4 miles south of Salem, on the opposite side of the highway and just east of where Burgan was last seen.

Miller began searching the area on foot and found Burgan several hundred yards off the highway in a heavily wooded area.

There were no apparent signs of injury or trauma, police said. An autopsy has been scheduled for Wednesday to determine the cause of death.

Dillon W. Burgan, 29, from Madison, Indiana, was reported missing from his family on July 29. A wooded area behind the house of an acquaintance of SR135, about four miles south of Salem, Indiana. Police had been searching Burgan for days until his body was found. A local farmer was called Brent Miller, Sheriff of Washington County, after finding clothing in one of his fields. The farm is on the other side of the freeway, just east of where Dylan Burgan was last seen. Miller then began exploring the area on foot and soon found Burgan’s body in a lush area hundreds of yards away from the freeway. Coroner in Washington County responded to the scene and clearly identified the body as Burgan. There were no obvious signs of injury or trauma, but an autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday to determine the cause of death. The case is still under investigation, according to Indianapolis Police Department.
