Court docs: Daleville mother whose toddler died after being found in hot car admitted she was drinking all day
An Indiana mother was intoxicated and could not explain how or why her 2-year-old son was left unattended in her vehicle, where the extreme heat is believed to have caused his death, authorities say.
Britni N. Wihebrink, 28, of Daleville was arrested early Thursday on a preliminary count of neglect of a dependent resulting in death, a felony carrying up to 40 years in prison.
Her son, Jaxon Stults, was unresponsive when discovered in her car about 6:45 p.m. Wednesday. He was pronounced dead about 15 minutes later in an ambulance rushing him to a hospital, according to Zach Crouch, a Delaware County deputy coroner.
Wihebrink reportedly told a Delaware County sheriff’s investigator she had been drinking since about 11 a.m. Wednesday, and could not account for Jaxon’s whereabouts after 1 or 2 p.m.
The mother said she had consumed “two wine coolers and three or four Jim Beam ‘honey shooters,’” a report said, and might have consumed more alcohol later.
Wihebrink said she had “a really good buzz and has a bad drinking problem,” investigator Kurt Walthour wrote. She indicated she was drinking “to help her hangover from the night before” and did not recall many of Wednesday’s events.
The report indicated Wihebrink gave inconsistent, conflicting accounts of what took place Wednesday.
