Phyllis Bailer was killed in 1972 at 26 years old. Fifty three years later, her case has been solved, officials said. Photo from the Indiana State Police.

''A case spanning back 53 years has just been solved with DNA technology, according to Indiana officials. On July 7, 1972, 26-year-old Phyllis Bailer and her 3-year-old daughter set out from Indianapolis to visit her parents in Bluffton, according to an April 16 news release from Indiana State Police. The two left Indianapolis around 8 p.m., but they never made it to their destination, police said. Bailer’s family called authorities and reported her missing. The next morning, her car was found abandoned on a highway about 80 miles north of the city in Grant County with the hood up and no one in it, police said. That same morning, a driver found Bailer’s body in a ditch along with her 3-year-old daughter, who was unharmed, in Allen County, about 70 miles northeast of where the car was discovered, police said. An autopsy determined Bailer had been shot and sexually assaulted, according to police.''

''In 2025, ISP and the Allen County Police Department brought the case to Identifinders International, a forensic genealogy company in California, who identified the killer.
They discovered that Lienemann’s DNA was on Phyllis’ clothes.
An Anderson, Indiana native living in Michigan, Lienemann, who was 25 in 1972, had a “significant criminal history,” ISP said. He had no known connection to Phyllis.
Despite having evidence that Lienemann played a role in Phyllis’ death, he will not go to court. Lienemann was beaten to death by two men in Detroit.
In 1985, two men, Clifford John Copley and Kevin Reece, reportedly beat Lienemann with a baseball bat after a property argument; screams were heard in Copley’s basement. After beating him, the two spray paint “sniffers” – as police called them – threw Lienemann inside of a dumpster and lit it on fire.''

Indiana State Police say they have identified the killer following a 53-year-long investigation into the murder of Jeanie Bailer. On Friday, July 7, 1972, 26-year-old Bailer was traveling from Indianapolis to Bluffton with her 3-year-old daughter in a borrowed car to visit her parents. Bailer and her daughter left Indianapolis around 8 p.m., but they never arrived at her parents house in Bluffton.

Fred got exactly what he deserved. This one makes me feel better than most of the "well, we solved it, but the killer's been dead for years" cases.
