PUTNAM COUNTY, Ind. -- Possible human remains were found Thursday afternoon in northwestern Putnam County, according to Indiana State Police.

Investigators with ISP say a mushroom hunter discovered the skeletal remains in the Van Bibber Lake area shortly before 1 p.m.

Detectives are waiting for a positive ID from the Putnam County Coroner, but they say that is likely to take a few weeks.
However, detectives say they are investigating the possibility that the discovery may be related to a person reported missing to the ISP Putnamville Post on Nov. 15, 2016.

Investigators will be working with the county coroner over the coming weeks to identify the remains.

But State Police detectives are already looking into the possibility that the remains could be linked to the disappearance of a person reported missing on Nov. 15, 2016, to officers at the Putnamville post.
Police said no additional information will be released until the investigation is completed.

MORTON, Ind. (AP) — Indiana State Police say a search turned up more human skeletal remains in western Indiana after a mushroom hunter found possible remains last week.

Police say the first remains were found Thursday in northwestern Putnam County near woods in the Van Bibber Lake area about 40 miles (64 kilometers) west of Indianapolis.

Detectives, the county coroner and others returned to the site Sunday. Krista Latham, an associate professor of biology and Anthropology at University of Indianapolis, and four of her students participated in the search and found additional remains.
State police aren’t speculating about identity of the person whose remains were found, but they say detectives are looking into the possibility that the remains could be linked to the disappearance of a person reported missing on Nov. 15, 2016.

The county coroner says the remains initially found on April 27 are those of William Wayne Johansen, a man reported missing about a year and a half prior.

Did you submit that Midge? You were right!

The remains found near Glen Flint Lake in April have been positively identified as a Putnam County man
On Tuesday evening, Putnam County Coroner Dave Brown officially identified the man as William Wayne “Billy” Johansen.
The exact cause of death has not been determined but based on the skeletal remains foul play is not suspected.
Brown called the case “the most detailed and intense forensic investigation done in close to a decade by our local coroners.”
Remains found in Clinton Township identified as Billy Johansen
