Three businessmen were found dead in a house at 1318 N. LaSalle St. that served as their bachelor on Dec. 1, 1971. All three of them were bound and gagged, each man's throat had been cut from ear to ear. It seems that in the previous afternoon several people had called to their offices looking for them, including a man who didn't leave his name, saying "I want to surprise them don't even tell them I called". Another caller, John K. Karnes, eventually decided to go over to the house. The door was ajar and he went in.
All three men had been struck in the head, then tied up -- Gierse and Hinson each in their bedrooms and Barker on the bathroom floor. Police said the killers then lifted each man up by the hair and slit his throat with such force that two of the bodies had nearly been decapitated. One of the killers left a bloody boot print in the bathroom, but that was about all the physical evidence police had to work with.
There were many theories on the murders (called "The LaSalle Street Murders") but the case remains unsolved.
