Officers responded to the 2200 block of North Mitthoefer Road, near East 21st Street, around 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27.

According to IMPD, shortly before 9:30 a.m. Jan. 27, officers responded to the 2200 block of North Mitthoefer Road, just north of East 21st Street, for a report of a person down. Officers arrived and found a woman in a parking lot with trauma.

Last Saturday, Jan. 27, IMPD officers found Lassere stabbed to death in a parking lot near North Mitthoefer Road and East 21st Street. Her family said she was on the way to a gas station and never came back.
"You know, there was so much trauma involved, but I know she fought. She was a fighter," Feggans said.

Feggans and Johnson drove hundreds of miles to be with Shannon's family. They mourn not just the loss of their best friend, but also 52-year-old Marianne Weis, who was found dead days later, just hundreds of feet away.

Lassere, who was deaf, had moved with her family from Seattle to Indianapolis three years ago. She left her home on the night of Jan. 26 to walk to a nearby gas station and never returned, he said, with his mom’s body found across from her home.

”This is a heavily traveled area,” Young said. “You could have seen something, any suspicious vehicles, anything that didn’t sit well with you.”

While IMPD won’t say if the two cases are connected, Justin Smith will.

”I feel like there is somebody out here doing something. It’s not a coincidence. Something’s wrong.”

The crime scenes lie in the middle of IMPD’s East District Beat 62 where there have been eight homicides since the start of 2023.

All across the East District, from 46th Street on the north, down Post Road on the west to Washington Street on the south, IMPD has investigated 26 homicides since the start of last year.

Three have been solved.

BREAKING: IMPD Chief Bailey, "This was brutal and evil what happened to them, but because they both fought back we were able to make an arrest." Arrested for both murders is David Hiner. Hiner was on probation at the time of the murders.

IMPD arrest man for his alleged role in Mitthoefer Road homicides

After two woman were found dead within a week of each other in the same area of Mitthoefer Road, IMPD and the Marion County Prosecutor's Office are holding a briefing on their investigation.

More than week later, IMPD and MCPO shared the news of the arrest of 30-year-old David Hiner.
Hiner is charged with two counts of murder for allegedly fatally stabbing both women.


He was currently on probation in LaPorte County after being released from prison in September 2023. According to court records, Hiner was a serious violent felon prior to these alleged crimes.
According to police, Hiner knew Marianne Weis but did not know Shannon Lassere.
