Car found in Cork linked to person missing for nearly 20 years

Garda divers are travelling to Crosshaven in Cork following the discovery of a car which it’s believed may be linked to a person who has been missing for almost 20 years.

The car was discovered in the water close to Crosshaven village by a team from the Cork City Missing Persons Search and Recovery (CCMPSR) group during a training exercise yesterday.

Thanks for the thread @TootsieFootsie.

'No human remains' in submerged Crosshaven car

"A car believed to belong to a man who went missing in 2004 was recovered from a river in Cork last night but no human remains were found inside.

"Family and friends of Barry Coughlan, 23, who was last seen in Crosshaven, Co Cork, on May 1, 2004, must now wait for Garda forensic experts to examine the vehicle which was recovered from the bed of the Owenabue River, close to where he was last seen, to confirm whether or not it is his car."

Funeral for Barry Coughlan 17 years after he went missing

The private funeral has taken place of a young man who went missing in 2004 after a breakthrough in the case came when his remains were found in a car located off the pier in Crosshaven, Co Cork, last month.

In a notice on Rip.ie, the parents of Barry Coughlan thanked "everyone who has helped and supported them over the last 17 years".

....snipped by me

Fr Duffy said while the family of Mr Shanahan are still without answers as to what happened after he left Cooper’s bar in Limerick on February 11, 2000, it was a huge source of comfort to be able to give him a funeral.

“The sad thing was that his mother had died two years previously. She never got to see that end of it.”

Fr Duffy said getting answers was important for families with missing loved ones.

Sorry to nitpick, @Cagle, but just for the avoidance of confusion or any distress, it's perhaps important to reinstate this part of the quoted article:

"Mr Coughlan, who disappeared without trace when he was 23, is survived by his parents Jim and Marie and his sister Donna, extended family, and a large circle of friends."

Gussie Shanahan was a different case. But yes, getting answers ... so important.

No worries - I didn't notice Mr. Shannahan's name in that section since I was just skimming the bottom half of the article! Thanks for providing the clarification!
