One can see the divide in the area by the headlines.

As a side note, 'Londonderry' is the unionist name for the city. 'Derry' is the Republican name for the same city.

In an effort to avoid antagonizing one of the two groups, new services will often alternate both names into their reporting.

Though the peace agreements sometimes seem more like play ground rules, they seem to be working mostly. Evidently,there are rules for nearly everything that brings the two groups in to contact, including the famous / infamous parades.

Protestants have civil rights to conduct historical marches by Catholic churches. Their bands can play battle songs while on parade. But.... Protestant bands cannot play any music, let alone battle songs, while passing Catholic churches, nor can the marchers break off and encircle them.

Likewise, Protestants can use their civil rights to conduct a historical parade through a Catholic village. But.... certain aspects have been toned down (permit is given to a limited number of marchers, traditional dusk / night return march has been rerouted).

As an additional side note, the rules also extend to memorials....


Protestants complain that a memorial to protestant civilians murdered by IRA gunmen is constantly being vandalized. The government then creates a joint memorial that has names of the murdered Protestants, but also includes names of Catholics from the same area who were murdered by Protestant militants. Vandalism stops.

Protestants then ask for a permit to hold a memorial march to the new memorial. But.... they need permission from the other tribe because the march is not historical and will pass through a Catholic area.

Catholics say they will give permission, but marchers cannot bring any flags or drums. Protestants insist that some drums and flags must be part of the march. Negotiations continue for years...

2 Men Are Charged In The Murder Of Northern Ireland Journalist Lyra McKee

Two men appeared in court Friday in connection with the murder of Lyra McKee, a Northern Irish journalist shot dead as she covered rioting in Londonderry in 2019.

Gearoid Cavanagh, 33, and Jordan Devine, 21, were charged with murder, possession of a firearm and ammunition, possession of petrol bombs, throwing petrol bombs, arson and riot.
McKee, 29, was observing anti-police rioting in the city, also known as Derry, when she was hit by gunfire in April 2019. The New IRA, a small paramilitary group that opposes Northern Ireland's peace process, said its members shot McKee by accident while firing at police.
Prosecutors said the two defendants are alleged to have been with the gunman who fired the fatal shot. A judge released the two men on bail until their next hearing on Oct. 7.

Lyra McKee: Niall Sheerin jailed for having gun used to kill journalist

Niall Sheerin was an associate of a "serious terrorist gang", says the judge at a court in Belfast.

''A man has been jailed for seven years for possessing the gun that police believe was used to kill journalist Lyra McKee.
Niall Sheerin, 29, from Tyrconnell Street in Londonderry, previously admitted possession of the gun on dates between September 2018 and June 2020.
He will spend seven years in prison followed by five years on licence.
Ms McKee, who was 29, was observing rioting in the Creggan estate in Derry when she was shot on 18 April 2019.
The judge at Belfast Crown Court said he believed Sheerin was an associate of a "serious terrorist gang who posed a danger to the public".
The dissident republican paramilitary group the New IRA has admitted carrying out the murder of Ms McKee.

The judge told the court that he was not sentencing Sheerin in connection with the murder.
He said that was because the "prosecution cannot establish to the requisite standard" that Sheerin was aware of the specific history of the weapon.
Sheerin had been charged with possessing the Hammerli X-Esse .22 pistol, a magazine and a quantity of .22 calibre cartridges.''

The trial of three men accused of murdering journalist Lyra McKee in Londonderry five years ago has begun.

Peter Cavanagh, 35, of Mary Street in Derry; Jordan Devine, 23, of Bishop Street; and Paul McIntyre, 56, of Kells Walk have all been charged with murder.

Lyra McKee died after being struck by a bullet while observing rioting in Creggan in April 2019.
The New IRA admitted responsibility for the 29-year-old’s murder.

Belfast Crown Court heard that four gunshots, fired that night by a masked man, “were the culmination of orchestrated disorder”.

It was also shown footage of an MTV documentary that was being filmed in the area on the day Ms McKee was killed.

The three accused face a number of other charges, including possession of a firearm and ammunition with intent, as well as possession and throwing of a petrol bomb.

Mr McIntyre is additionally charged with membership of a proscribed organisation.

Three men from Derry – Peter Cavanagh, 37, of Mary Street, Jordan Gareth Devine, 25, of Bishop Street, and Paul McIntyre, 58, of Kells Walk – have been charged with her murder.

Prosecuting barrister David McDowell KC said forensic image analyst Andrew Wooller identified 19 individuals by height, build, clothing and trainers who appeared to be involved in the disorder.

He said Cavanagh, Devine and McIntyre, as well as Campbell and Gillen, can be linked to the scene on April 18 by an analysis of imagery gathered, which includes footage filmed by an MTV crew on the day of the shooting.

Mr McDowell also contended that those involved in rioting in the area on April 16 and 18 “displayed forensic awareness” by burning clothing.

He noted a number of missing items of clothing associated with defendants that were not discovered during searches, nor have been produced since, suggesting, he added, that they had been “deliberately disposed of”.
