James was last seen on the afternoon of March 30, 1997. He left his Augusta, Georgia residence to ride his 4-wheeler to a friend's home, about a 5-minute drive away. He told his parents he would call if he was going to be late coming back. He never returned or called, and has not been seen or heard from since.

James' 4-wheeler was found abandoned a week later in a wooded area in Richmond County. It was covered in blood. Two suspects have been questioned in his disappearance, but no one has been charged. Foul play is suspected.
