Kyoto: A week after a fifth-grade boy went missing, his yellow school bag ... YouTube · TBS NEWS DIG Powered by JNN

Rucksack of missing 11-year-old Kyoto boy found in mountainous area
_w1700.png

Name: Yuki Adachi (安達 結希)
Age: 11 (5th-grade student)
Missing Since: March 23, 2026, approx. 8:00 AM
Location: Near Sonobe Elementary School, Nantan City, Kyoto Prefecture, Japan
Details of Disappearance:
Yuki was last seen on the morning of March 23, 2026. His father dropped him off by car near his elementary school at around 8:00 AM. However, he never arrived at school and has been missing since then.
On March 29, six days after his disappearance, his school bag (a yellow "randoseru" or school knapsack) was found by a relative in a mountainous area approximately 3 kilometers away from the school.
Description:
Height: 134.5 cm (approx. 4'5")
Build: Slim
Clothing when last seen: * A grey sweatshirt with the number "84" on the chest.
Beige trousers.
Other: He was carrying a yellow school bag at the time.
As of March 30, the Kyoto Prefectural Police have deployed a search team of 40 officers to the area where the bag was discovered, but Yuki has not yet been found. Authorities are calling for any information regarding his whereabouts.

I am a newcomer to Websleuths. I decided to create this thread because this case is extremely baffling to us in Japan, and I would value the insights of this community.
There are several perplexing aspects to this disappearance:
1. The Setting: A Small Mountainous Community
While it is officially called a "City," Nantan is actually an administrative district formed by merging four small mountainous villages. The total population across all four districts is under 30,000, and the area has no known history of organized crime or human trafficking.
2. The School Drop-off and CCTV Discrepancy
Japanese elementary schools often have onsite after-school care facilities known as "Twilight Schools" or "Gakudo" for children of working parents. The father drove onto the school grounds and dropped his son off directly in front of this facility at approximately 8:00 AM. While the father's car was captured on CCTV entering the premises, there is reportedly no footage of the boy himself on any of the school’s security cameras. No witnesses have come forward who saw the actual moment he stepped out of the vehicle.
3. The Recovery of the Backpack in a Previously Searched Area
The location where the boy's yellow school bag was found had already been searched multiple times by volunteers. I am attaching a screenshot from an X (formerly Twitter) user showing news footage of the area, along with an English translation generated via ChatGPT. The bag appeared in that spot after the initial searches were completed. It remains unclear if the boy placed it there while wandering or if it was left by someone else.

Currently, this case has captured national attention in Japan, and everyone is searching for answers. Unfortunately, the internet is flooded with malicious rumors—such as baseless accusations against the father or unverified claims about the boy’s developmental status. I am hoping to engage in a more constructive and analytical discussion here.

So the father is the only source for him being dropped off — no one saw the kid get out? *And* a member of the family found the backpack?

  • #4
You are correct. Neither other students nor teachers witnessed the boy getting out of the car.
Regarding the backpack, news reports state that it was found by a "relative," but the specific identity of which family member found it has not been publicly disclosed.

This is so sad. I hate to say that it seems like the family harmed the boy and tried to cover it up :(

Update on the Timeline:
A local TV station has published an article summarizing the timeline of events. I will post the link below:

[Timeline Summary] Missing 5th-grade boy in Kyoto: School bag found in the mountains, 3km from school

Please note that March 23rd was not a regular school day for Yuki, as it was the graduation ceremony for the 6th graders. (In Japan, March is the graduation season for elementary schools.) Although underclassmen did not have classes, Yuki headed to school that day to celebrate the students a year above him.

Timeline of March 23rd:
8:00 AM: The father drove 9km from their home and dropped Yuki off within the school premises.
8:30 AM: Roll call was taken in Yuki’s class. The homeroom teacher noticed his absence. Under standard operating procedures, the parents should have been contacted at this point, but the teacher failed to do so.
Late Morning: The parents went to the school to pick Yuki up, timing their arrival with the end of the graduation ceremony.
11:45 AM: The homeroom teacher informed the mother that Yuki was not present. The parents immediately reported him missing to the police.

Search Efforts and Discovery:
Following the report, police and volunteers conducted multiple searches in the surrounding mountainous area. One volunteer stated in an interview that they had participated in searches on the 24th, 25th, and 28th.
There has been no evidence or record of the boy using any buses or trains during this period.

On the morning of March 29th: A relative found Yuki’s school bag in the mountains, approximately 3km away from the elementary school. His neck warmer and hat were found inside the bag.

Do we have any information regarding Yuki's personality? Was he normally adventurous or was he shy?

Regarding his personality, I could only find one mention in an article released by a formal news outlet. Here is the link:

「突然いなくなるような子ではない」京都小5・安達結希さん(11)が行方不明 校内カメラに姿なし、目撃者ゼロ…卒業式の日に学校で何が起きたのか | 国内 | ABEMA TIMES | アベマタイムズ

In this article, the mother of one of the boy’s classmates describes him as "honest, cheerful, charming, and friendly." She also mentioned that "he did not seem like the type of child who would suddenly disappear on his own."

The article also describes the environment surrounding the elementary school, noting the presence of a large river and roads with heavy traffic, suggesting various possibilities for what might have happened. Please note, however, that this article was released before his backpack was discovered.

Additional Note:
As of now, there have been no reports of the boy’s family giving interviews or press conferences, nor have they made any public statements regarding his personality.

Very suspicious that a relative found the backpack in an area that had been searched multiple times previously by authorities.

Even more concerning- Yuki was not captured on any cameras on school grounds that day

Are Ring doorbells a thing in Japan?
Does his own home or neighbors have cameras showing how many people got into the car to go to school?

Yes, by "ring doorbells," I assume you mean video doorbells (intercoms with cameras).
Regarding your question about security cameras and video doorbells in Japan:

1. Video Doorbells (Intercoms):
Most modern houses and apartments in Japan are equipped with video intercoms. However, unlike the "Ring" doorbells common in the US, many older Japanese models only record when someone actually presses the button. They don't always have a "motion-sensing" recording feature that captures people just walking by.

2. Residential Security Cameras:
While some private homes have outdoor security cameras, they are not as ubiquitous as in some other countries. Most cameras in Japan are installed by local governments or shopping districts on main streets or at major intersections.

3. The Area Around the School:
As mentioned before, Nantan is a quiet, rural area. While there are houses near the school, many of them are older traditional homes that may not have the latest motion-sensing security technology. The police are likely currently collecting and analyzing any available footage from dashboard cameras (dashcams) from cars that were in the area at that time.

Besides the unconfirmed drop off, when is the last confirmed sighting of the boy?

This feels like too many stories just like it in the US.

I hope it somehow ends differently.

Based on current media reports, here is what we know regarding his last confirmed sighting:

Third-party sightings: There have been no reports of third-party sightings (CCTV, neighbors, or teachers) after he was dropped off by his father on the morning of March 23rd.

The School Schedule: * March 23 (Mon): The day he went missing. He was presumably at home before leaving for school, but his morning routine hasn't been detailed in news reports.

March 20–22 (Fri–Sun): Japan had a 3-day holiday weekend. March 20th was a national holiday (Vernal Equinox Day), followed by the regular weekend. School was closed during this period.

Last potential sighting at school: If he attended school normally the previous week, the last time teachers or students saw him would have been Thursday, March 19th. However, there is currently no official confirmation or media coverage regarding his attendance on that day.

In short, there is a significant "gap" in confirmed third-party sightings due to the long holiday weekend.

Sad. We definitely need more info.

No one seeing him is strange. If he ran away or walked to that mountainous area, I'd suspect that at least one person would've seen him venturing there? I hope the parents aren't involved, but definitely seems like there's some missing info here. :/

Is there any reason Yuki would go to that area where the backpack was found? It seems like the authorities searched that spot relatively quickly (so it must be obvious for some reason for him to go there), but the televised news reports suggest it would be odd for a student to be walking there.

From a purely websleuths perspective there's about a 90% likelihood of one particular explanation.

The home and vehicles should be thoroughly searched while each individual family member is separately interviewed about all the events of the past two weeks.

Still hoping for a good outcome, but this really doesn't sound good ☹️

welcome to websleuths. I hope Yuki is found all right.

unfortunately, given his age and the amount of time that's passed, the odds he is ok are not good and get worse with each day.

you ask for our insights. at websleuths, we presume family are victims and do not investigate or accuse them unless and until law enforcement name them as suspects. that constrains what i will say right now, but I will try.

there are only so many logical possibilities for what has happened to a person who disappeared. the following are unlikely here: suicide, death by natural causes, kidnapping by a stranger, and confusion/disorientation due to mental health or substance issues. homicide and accidental death are realistic possibilities. so is voluntary disappearance, but at his age that may have turned into accidental death by now.

if it is homicide, statistics point to someone he knew. for children, the perpetrators are highly likely to be parents or caregivers.

if we take the family's statements at face value, then he may have run away instead of entering the school, wandered into the wilderness, and may have had an accidental death by now. it is also possible he is still alive, on his own somewhere.

confirming the father's claim of dropping him off at school is essential.

Agreed. Sounds the most likely scenario from the information given. Poor kid.
