(2016) Key suspect found in case of missing Yeremi Vargas
“15 years have passed since the disappearance of Yéremi Vargas and the family continues to fight for justice (2022)
LAS PALMAS DE GRAN CANARIA, March 10 (EUROPA PRESS) -
This Thursday, March 10, it will be 15 years since little Yéremi Vargas disappeared, who was 7 years old when he lost track of him while playing in an open field near the family home in Vecindario, in Santa Lucía de Tirajana (Gran Canaria). ), and his family continues to fight for justice.
Yéremi's mother, Ithaisa Suárez, has assured on her social networks that her son's case not only changed their lives, but was "a before and after for everyone", placing special emphasis on the fact that they are still fighting to be clarify what happened and clarify that they are doing it "with thousands of obstacles from the justice system."
"My impression is only one," he added, "and in my opinion, instead of wanting to do justice, they want to seek a ruling to close [the case] again, but we will fight. I feel helplessness, anger and pain."
Likewise, he insisted that they are going to fight "until the end" so that what happened to Yéremi is known. "I'm not going to give up and I'm going to tell all the truths. We don't want revenge, we have asked for justice peacefully," he said.
Likewise, he thanked the Civil Guard for supporting them in their search "for all the years they were able to do it and I know they will do it again as soon as I let them work", as well as "all the people who are with us to always support us." .
THE HYPOTHESES WORKED SO FAR
The investigation, which has not ceased in all these years although the case is currently closed, took a new turn when the Civil Guard announced on March 3, 2012 that it had new information about a vehicle and clothing of the minor, asking for citizen collaboration waiting that these contributed to keeping the case alive based on some detail provided by the neighbors.
hus, in 2012, Benemérita worked on several hypotheses, such as family revenge, human trafficking, pedophilia or organ trafficking. For this reason, they investigated 195 people accused of pedophilia, under 65 years of age and with crimes against children under fifteen years of age, 15 prisoners accused of these same crimes and several people on the island linked to this type of crimes.
In this way, on June 1, 2016, the Civil Guard located a suspect in the disappearance and homicide of Yéremi, it was Antonio Ojeda 'El Rubio', who had been in prison in Algeciras (Cádiz) since 2015 for sexually abusing of another minor. At the end of that month, the suspect was transferred to the Juan Grande prison, south of Gran Canaria, appearing before the judge on July 13, although he refused to testify or offer DNA samples.
Later, during the month of September 2016, a cellmate of 'El Rubio' said that he had told him how a neighbor ended the minor's life and burned his body, something that the accused denies; while at the end of 2016, Antonio Ojeda was sentenced to five years in prison for an attack on another minor who was playing on a street in El Doctoral in 2012, leaving prison for it on March 9, 2020, now one year.
At that time, another fellow prisoner said that after learning of this sentence, he sank and said that Yéremi's case "had gotten out of hand" and that he had to "disappear" him.
However, the Investigative Court number 2 of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, which had been dealing with the case since the day of the child's disappearance, finally considered that there was no evidence or solid indications that incriminated 'El Rubio' in the Yéremi case. , archiving the proceedings opened against him, a decision that was ratified in March 2018 by the Las Palmas Court.
For its part, the Investigative Court Number 2 of San Bartolomé de Tirajana ordered in an order dated September 2, 2021 the reopening of the case of Yéremi's disappearance.”
