Jersey Shore Star Mike 'The Situation' Sorrentino Sentenced to 8 Months in Prison

Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino has been sentenced to eight months in prison and two years of supervised release in his tax evasion case.

He must also complete 500 hours of community service and was given $123,913 in restitution, which he has already paid, plus a fine of $10,000 that must be paid within 30 days.[...]

Sorrentino and his brother Marc were initially indicted in September 2014 for tax offenses and conspiring to defraud the United States after allegedly failing to properly pay taxes on $8.9 million in income from 2010 to 2012. In April 2017, both men were indicted on additional charges including tax evasion, structuring and falsifying records.

In January, Sorrentino pled guilty to one count of tax evasion. His brother Marc pled guilty to one count of aiding in the preparation of a false and fraudulent tax return and was sentenced to two years in prison on Friday.

There are a lot of people who would gladly go to jail for eight months for millions of dollars. I don’t know why the restitution isn’t higher.

Does anybody know why Mike got 8 months and his brother got 2 years? What was the difference in their cases?

Michael Sorrentino admitted that in tax year 2011, he earned taxable income, including some that was paid in cash, and that he took certain actions to conceal some of his income to avoid paying the full amount of taxes he owed. He made cash deposits into bank accounts in amounts less than $10,000 each so that these deposits would not come to the attention of the IRS.

Marc Sorrentino admitted that during tax years 2010, 2011 and 2012, he earned taxable income and that he assisted his accountants in preparing his personal tax return for those years, willfully providing them with false information. His personal tax returns under-reported his total income and taxable income.

I'm not sure, but from reading above it seems that Michael only admitted to falsifying his 2011 tax return whereas Marc admitted to falsify 2010, 2011, and 2012 returns.
