THE sister of a missing Belfast man is demanding answers after he vanished from Benidorm eight days ago.
John Hardy, or John George, 36, has not been seen or heard from since driving down to the Spanish resort from Alicante last Saturday.
His last contact with family was said to be a ‘distressing’ phone call on that same afternoon.
The father-of-two then missed his flight home to Belfast on Wednesday, sparking serious concern.

Sat 14 Dec John flies from Belfast to Alicante, on the coast of eastern Spain.

He then gets in a car and drives down to Benidorm, where he is due to visit a friend.

He makes his last known phone call to a family member in which he sounds ‘very distressed’, according to appeals made by relatives on social media.

John has not been seen or heard from since,

I'm glad you've posted this, @StillDiggin. I've been following it on social media for a few days now. My gut feeling from the outset was that there was a back-story to this that wasn't fully being made public, and the link posted by @Parsnip suggests that this might be the case. I'll happily put my hand up if I am shown to be wrong about this. There seems to be no mention about the purpose of John's visit to Spain (e.g. pleasure or business, or a bit of both).

A number of Facebook groups aimed at tourists to and ex-pats in Benidorm are featuring John's disappearance. One such group, whose prime mover seems to be well-known and well-connected in the area, was very quick off the mark in picking up John's case. However, that seemed to come to a very abrupt and unexplained halt a few days ago. I can't remember the name of the group, and I wouldn't be able to post a link to it anyway.

It's interesting to me that he was driving to Benidorm but flying home. What was to become of the car he was driving? Was this the last leg of a Spanish vacation, and he was dropping off a rental and flying home?

Theres been a renewed appeal for that case as the father and son lived some what close to me ie sussex by the sounds of it police know who done it but can't prove it

Yes that's them there was a post by Sussex Police on the 4th of December that goes in to a bit more detail ect won't post it here as its from Facebook

The Police Service in Northern Ireland said the force had "received a report on Wednesday, 18th December that a 37-year-old man from Belfast, holidaying in Spain, was believed to be missing."
It added: "Enquiries are ongoing in conjunction with our international policing partners."

When a person of nationality A goes missing in country B, their family generally have 2 options
(a) report the person missing to the police of country A, who then lodge the MP report with Interpol. Interpol Country A then asks Interpol Country B to take on the case. Interpol Country B will then liaise with LE in country B to action the request. Reporting outcomes will generally flow back along the same pathway.

(b) report directly to the police in country B - many countries will only take a direct report if the next of kin is in Country B to make a report (they won't take an internet or phone reports, in person only).

In either case, nothing can happen until family make a formal MP report to LE. LE cannot launch a search based on internet posts or media. It seems the requirements for a MP report in Northern Ireland were not met until Wednesday 18 December.

I have no idea what the outcome will be, but have seen the gamut in my career, from MPs being deceased to MPs who have voluntarily cut contact with family, and everything you could imagine in between. I wonder if he was distressed because he'd been arrested but didn't want to admit that to his family.

I'm curious to hear what the friend in Benidorm has to say. Is the friend from Belfast, or did they meet somewhere else?

When family describes the last phone call from him as sounding in distress, is there any more information about what that means? What time of day? Had he just arrived in Benidorm, or was it several hours later?

JOHN HARDY LATEST: FOOTAGE OF MISSING BELFAST MAN IN SPAIN EMERGES ONLINE AS COPS HUNT ‘CRIMINAL ACQUAINTANCE’ AND FAMILY PLEA FOR ‘NIGHTMARE’ TO END

According to the Belfast Telegraph, video footage has emerged online showing John inside an apartment with a group of ‘Russian-sounding’ men.

It is not known if the video was recorded in Benidorm or Torrevieja, where John moved to earlier this year.

Police in Northern Ireland are said to be aware of the footage and are reportedly looking to speak to a criminal ‘from Newtownards but now living in Spain’.

They believe the individual may have information about John’s whereabouts, but have so far been unable to contact him.
