The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the public’s help in locating a Camarillo man last seen in Thousand Oaks on July 27.
Although it’s been two weeks since Jose Antonio Velasquez, 35, went missing, his family continues to hold out hope that “Toñito,” as they call him, will be found alive and well.
“We are using the present tense when we talk about him,” one of Velasquez’s cousins said. “And we are not giving up.”
Velasquez’s family said he had not mentioned any out-of-town trips and that they’d be surprised to learn he had any enemies.
“Toñito is a very kind, very sweet and very humble person,” said his mother, Rita Maldonado, through an interpreter. “I want to say I love him and to come home and we miss him. I just want him home.”
Of Honduran descent, Velasquez stands 5 feet, 9 inches tall, weighs 170 pounds and has brown eyes and black hair.
Having recently moved from Simi Valley, he spends time throughout the county, particularly Camarillo, Simi and Thousand Oaks, police said.
His family says Velasquez has a passion for soccer and plays on various adult leagues.
He moved from Virginia, where his mother lives, to California to live with family in Simi Valley in 2016. He had moved into his own apartment in Camarillo the week before he went missing.
Another recent accomplishment was earning a general contractors license and starting his own contracting company, his family said.
Police recovered his work van, a white Ram Promaster 2500 high roof, on July 28 in the 1600 block of Rancho Conejo Boulevard in Newbury Park.
Though he was last seen near the Janss Marketplace on July 27, his last known contact was with a family member on July 28.
“He had a particular cousin he would talk with every day,” his mother said. “All of a sudden, there was no call.”
The sheriff’s office is asking anyone with information regarding Velasquez to call Detective Jeff Jacobs at (805) 384-4729.
Family members, who are offering $15,000 for information leading to Velasquez, said they want him to know how proud they are of him and want nothing more than for him to return for big hugs, a big party and to share a “cafecito con pan.”
