There are lots of local articles about this quadruple homicide and attempted murder of another family member.
Suspect Was ‘Obsessed’ With Mother of 4 Killed at North Hollywood Gas Station During Shooting Rampage, Family Says
We get so much crime in LA that not all of them make it to WS, but the background of this crime is coming out in the media.
So, it apparently started with an attempt to murder his own family:
Suspect arrested in San Fernando Valley killing spree
He kills father and brother, then takes off to kill a woman he had been stalking (no reports that they were in a relationship, but he was obsessed with her).
Then he kills a random man. So this is a kind of spree killing, in which the family issues boil over, he takes out a person he's been obsessing over and then goes on to shoot a person at random.
Suspect was quickly apprehended, so it's not become a major case to sleuth. The unknown aspects include why he chose this young woman. The fact that he was apparently already known to police is not comforting.
